Rather than reprinting the same Homecoming 2003, Buy A Book For Lee 2003, and Eddie and the Cruiser's plans for the LHS Cruise 2004, I am going to put links to them instead. If you need more info then you can click on the link and go to the pages devoted to these topics.
I will however continue to update you on changes made to the plans or events. The major new news is that Linda McAdams Johnson, has worked it out with the current Lee High School principal and the tailgate party on Friday night, the football game that follows, and the Saturday morning breakfast activites have been modified to include all the graduating classes of Lee High school, not just '64-'65-'66. You Classmates that still live in Huntsville will start hearing about the activities on radio and TV as the event gets closer, thanks to Linda's hard work. Many of you already know about this and many families plan to attend the activities as a group. This should turn out to be quiet a festive time for the Lee Fami-LEE.
I'm including photos below of the coffee mugs and T-shirts that were created to celebrate Homecoming 2003 and which will be on sale at the various functions for as long as they last.
Over half of the Class of '64's and '65's alloted tickets to the Dance on Saturday night have already been reserved, and the Class of '66 is also getting requests, so if you plan to go you need to reserve your tickets now. Last Week's Mystery Building
Tommy Towery, Class of '64
When I selected this building for last week's Mystery Building, I only knew it as the VFW club, and was unaware of it's status as the YMCA and the church annex roles it also served. I remember this building primarily because my father and mother were big visitors there, since he was a VFW member. My greatest memory was the Sherman tank that sat in the front of the building during that period - what a great thing to play on. When I was writing my book, I remember that I was at some function in this building when "Ike" beat Stephenson in the presidential race. _______________________________________________
Walt Thomas, Class of '64
The old VFW Armory building on Dallas Street. The landmark I remember was the tank. It was used as a practice gym for Lee's initial basketball teams, as well as an annex for 5th St (Now Andrew Jackson) Baptist Church, where Sunday School and Training Union classes were held. It was also a night-time hangout during any other time, whether open or not; and much, much fun was had there for all in the surrounding neighborhoods. ______________________________________
Bob Alverson, Class of '65
The picture this week is the old Dallas YMCA building. For years after it was the "Y" it was the VFW. The first thing I saw everyday when I came out the front door of my house was this building. I lived in the last house on Rison directly across the ditch from it. I spent many days dodging the people at the VFW to play on and in the tank that sat in the yard.
Second Baptist Church (now Jackson Way Baptist) bought the building in the early 60's and used it for class rooms and a recreation facility. When our church building burned in '64, I believe, we used the gym for worship services. Unfortunately in later years it deteriorated and had to be demolished. The property is now under the I-565 by-pass. ______________________________________
Jim ('64) and Peggy ('68) Pierce
"Dallas St.(?) YMCA. Cannon in front yard. I remember attending a "hootenanny" here with my brother Bob, Jimmy and Jerry Dorriety and several other Lee band members. Peggy says it belonged to Jackson Way Baptist Church by this time and the Rev. Dorriety was the pastor. Seems like there was a two lane bowling alley on the right side as you entered and a well-worn basketball court.
In re story on Coach Nunnally I seem to remember being lined up on entering shop class to get paddled - just for showing up. Would like to hear stories in re Band members and theater/auditorium activities. ______________________________________

It's the old Dallas YMCA-Armory building. It was the Church (5th Street Baptist - Jacksonway Baptist now) Annex as I new it. Being a member of the church and a Humes Ave. kid, I remember many fun times in this building. Remember it had a two lane bowling alley on the Big Ditch end with a pinsetter that was human powered, and a balconey around the top of the gym floor. I also remember there was a good crawfish catchin hole right next to it.....right in front of Alverson's house.
Landmark......the small cannon that set out in the front yard. ___________________________________

I believe the building in this week's newsletter is the old V.F.W. building that was located behind Jackson Way Baptist Church. If it is, the church bought it after fire destroyed their sanctuary and used it for church services and other activities. Even weddings, that's where I was married on February 4, 1966. ______________________________________

More Lakewood Memories by Barbara Seely Cooper Class of '64
Just wanted to add some thoughts to the Lakewood Memories stories. My folks built a house on Kenwood Drive and we moved there from Redstone Arsenal in 1957. A few months after we moved in, my youngest sister, Donna, was born. The first years in Lakewood were focused on trying to grow grass and some trees in all that hard-baked Alabama clay - Dad was determined to do it, one blade at a time, and the whole family had to help water, fertilize, and mow. The house was sold in 2001 when we moved Mom and Dad to CT to be near my 2 sisters, but in the years that I visited there after marrying John Ridgeway-another Lakewood resident- in 1966, I was always impressed with how lush Lakewood had become. Even though I can't recall everyone's name, I can still pick out many of the houses where friends from Lee lived.
Dad coached a girl's softball team with many of the Lakewood girls as players: Nancy Harris, Judy Scarborough, the Milburn girls, Kathy Broughton, and others. (He continued to coach softball teams for Cindy and Donna, with other Lee/Lakewood members.)We girls drove him CRAZY, with no-shows for practice (So-and-so has a date tonite) or emergency time-outs in a game (So-and-so broke her bra strap) but we had a very good team that went on to play in the League finals and also had players chosen for the All-Star team. We always had some sort of practice or game going in our front yard (the trees were still scrawny then). We rode bikes everywhere, caught fireflies, sat on the front porch, caught stinky crawdaddies in the creek, slept with open windows, and spent more time outside than inside. In the later years, we called the house "Fort Seely" because Dad had tried to make the property secure: barred front and back doors, windows nailed shut, fenced yard with motion-activated lights....sad.
Mom and Dad became militant when the proposal to open Kenwood Drive to Mastin Lake was made. They fought it to the very end, but of course the road was connected. Dad can still get worked up about it.
All in all, for the Seely clan, Lakewood was a great place to live, play, and have friends, and of course, go to school. _________________________________________ |

Another Orange Bowl Tidbit by Collins (CE) Wynn Class of '64
I received a great letter from Rainer the other day which prompted me to recall that I have a band program that some of our readers may have an interest in. The program is from a Band Concert (fund-raiser, I think, related to the band's trip to the 1964 Orange Bowl. Why, you ask, would a guy who can't carry a tune in a bucket and one who has no musical talents whatever (other than dancing a honky tonk two step), have a copy of a Band Concert program? In his letter, Rainer wrote me "I have the itinerary of the band's trip to the Orange Bowl in '64. An Officer Wynn accompanied us down there. Any relation to you?". Officer Wynn certainly was related to me he was my father, a Huntsville Police Officer. Dad had a wonderful time on that trip and it was one of the highlights of his life he talked about it for years afterward until his untimely death in 1970. He was involved in several band activities leading up to the trip which explains why I have the program. I have included it for everyone's enjoyment. ____________________________________
