Males in Songs Trivia Answers

You never know who's going to pop up with answers to the trivia contests.  This week, the first two to reply were classmates that have been lurking for a while and haven't sent us anything in any of the contests.  We were happy to hear from Gary Kinkle, Class of '64, who was the first one to correctly identify the answers to the songs. Gary is in Miami now, and I haven't seen him since I ran into him about 25 years ago when I was on vacation in Colorado.  I was walking down the street in Central City as a tourist, when my ex-wife says to me "I think that guy is calling you."  That guy turned out to be Gary, and once again I was convinced that the world is a lot smaller than we sometimes think.  Gary sent in the answers, but did not vailidate his entry with a personal note, so  I wrote back to him and asked for a validation story.  He supplied me with one, and also "validated" the reason we ask for a memory associated with the contests.  His memory was one he had not thought of in a long time, and that is what we like to do...bring back memories.

Gary wrote:

"Hello Tommy, yes I remember seeing you in Central City. That was a looong time ago. Haven't lived in Colorado in over 21 years. You said I needed a
'memory' to go along with the song trivia. I remember the song Big Bad John. While partying one night  (don't remember who, when or where) we wrote a
parody to it. I believe it was pretty good.  It was called 'Big Bad Momma'. Haven't thought about it in years."
Here are the questions again and Gary's answers:

1. I want a brave man, I want a cave man Johnny (Get Angry/ Joanie Sommers) show me that you care, really care for me. (1962)

2. Drink all the water you can hold, wash your hands, cool your feet, but leave a bottle full for others, thank you kindly Desert Pete/Kinston Trio. (1963)

3. Every morning at the mine you could see him arrive, he stood six foot six and weighed two-forty five. (#1 for five weeks in 1961)   Big Bad John/Jimmie Dean

4. He rode easy in the saddle, kinda tall and lean, and at first you thought nothing but a streak of mean, could make a man look so downright strong, but one look in his eyes and you knowed you were wrong. (1963)   The Reverand Mr. Black/Kingston Trio

5. He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack. Go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track. (1958)
   Johnny B. Goode/Chuck Berry

6. He wore a big ol' turban wrapped around his head, and a scimitar by his side. And every evening about midnight he'd jump on his camel named Clyde...and ride. (Fill in the blank and name the rider) (1962)
Ahab the Arab/Ray Stevens

7.Seven little girls smooching in the back seat, everyone in love with Fred. (1959)
Seven Little Girls/Paul Evans and the Curls

8. Jimmy called me on the phone, but I was gone, not at home, cause I was out parked all alone, with darling
Norman
(Two blanks with different names here) (1962)  Norman/Sue Thompson

9. For the words he will pour in your ear, but his lies can't disguise what you fear. (1964)
   Goldfinger/Bricusse, Newley, Berry

10. He ordered Chet's Guitar course C.O.D. Makes "A" and "E" and he's working on "B". Digs "C" and "W" and "R" and "B" And me and the chimpanzee agree that one day soon he will be a celebrity. (We need two answers here - the blank name and the name of the male being talked about) (1969)  Tarzen
Gitarzen/Ray Stevens

So the question goes out...who else helped this beginning song writer come up with "Big Bad Momma" and where was the party etc?  Anyone have any memories of this besides Gary?

The second set of correct answers came from Darryl Glassco, Class of '65, another usually quiet site lurker.  It's great to get a few more classmates to participate and to know that we are stirring up some memories for them.  Darryl was on the Traveller staff with me back in 1964 and always considered a friend.
Darryl's e-mail started:

"I usually try to at least glance at the site update every week. I have made unsuccessful stabs at some of the trivia items that have been posted, but everything on this clicked. I even remember some of the artists."

I guess if you ask the right questions, in the right way, you get people to speak up with the answers.  Remember, you don't have to have the answers right to send us a personal memory about anything on the site.

The two reliable newlywed Classmates from Georgia,
Jennifer & Craig Bannecke Classes of '65 &' 66
, sent in another set of all correct answers.  They write "Here are mine and Craig's answers to the trivia.  Have fun at the get together this weekend.  Sorry we can't come. Big Bad John was one of my favorites.  Even today when I purchase a package of Jimmy Dean Sausage it brings back memories of that song and I walk back to my groceries cart humming Big John, Big John, ....Big Bad John.   Desert Pete I don't remember but I'm familiar with Texas Pete...Any relation ? Goldfinger is still one of the best sound tracks ever written for a movie.  Years later when I worked at Fort Knox, Kentucky and saw the actual Gold Vault I was a little disappointed. It just sits out in a field by itself and no one pays any attention to it!"

A fellow staff member, Joy Rubins Morris, Class of '64 came through with many correct answers but she states" Considering the number of brain cells I have lost or misplaced over the years, I am hoping to
get at least three right."  She actually got eight right!

2.  Good old "Desert Pete" sung by one of my favorite groups the Kingston Trio
3.  Big Bad John - sung by Jimmy Dean of Jimmy Dean sausage fame
4.  The Rev. Mr. Black sung by the Kingston Trio - (I had major help with this one
5.  Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry - Everyone should get this one
6.  Clyde the camel and his rider Ahab the Arab.  I loved the humor in Ray Stevens's songs
7.  Fred - I think was the kisser in this song.  I was only fourteen at the time but remembered it - selective memory
10. Chet's guitar course and Gitarzan by Ray Stevens.  We had a lot of humor in our music back then - today's kids are missing a lot
(Continued in right column)

Another Classmate Offers
Some
Huntsville Trivia Questions
Submitted by Robert "Sonny" &
Winona Brown Turner, Class of '65

(Editor's Note: Several months ago we received these trivia questions from Sonny and Winona, but they got misplaced in the bundles of e-mail and recently resurfaced.  Some of these should be easy, because we have covered a few of the items in other trivia contests or memories, but still, here are the current offerings.)

1. Where did the Butler High School kids hang-out?
2. What was the name of the theater at the corner of Triana & 9th Ave?  3. What were the names of the two back-to-back drive-in theaters between Parkway and Meridian St?
4. What was the name of the newsstand on Clinton Ave. downtown?
5. What was the west side of the square known as?
6. What were the two prior names of Jackson Way Baptist Church?
7. Where was Bill's Drive-in Cafe located?
8. What was the part of Meridian Street as you came out of downtown called?
9. Who comes to mind when you hear the name HUB?
10. What was the nickname given to Mr. Jones who was vice-principal at Lee?

For you new participants, we have one rule to the trivia contests.  Each entrant must "Validate" their answers with a personal memory or note about one or more of the questions.  You don't have to comment on all of them, but surely one will bring back a memory you can share with us.

Just a week too late I came up with an original ticket to The Orange Bowl Capers, found in a box being unpacked from my move.  From the looks of the ticket, the show was either put on for two weekends or the weekend was changed from December 5 and 6 to December 10 and 11.  This is a reminder that we would still like to have some more stories from the trip, and also that you can order you own copy of the CD of the LP record that was created to help finance this trip.  Check out the Souvenir Shop.  You'll also see that the cost of the Top Hats of Dixie CD has been reduced from $12.50 to $7.50, which includes shipping.  And remember, all proceeds from the Souvenir Shop help support this web site.

Hi, Tommy
Barbara Biggs Knott, Class of 66 (please call me Barb) checking in.  My e-mail address is bjknott@adelphia.net.

This was my first visit to our alumni page. I was shocked and saddened to see all my classmates who have passed away in the last several years. I have been living in Maryland for the past 33 years, and don't get back to Alabama much since my parents have
passed away. Seeing all my classmates who are no longer here, makes me realize the importance of friends and family, and I count my blessings. Thanks for a great look-see into our past, present, and future.

Barb

This week's issue is later than normal, since I didn't get home from the 2K2 reunion until almost 9:30pm on Sunday night.  I've decided to publish just one photo from the reunion and get the issue out, and include the comments from Judy "Fedrowisch" Kincaid, Class of '66, and I'll add my own observations and the other inputs we recieve for next week's issue.
There are many more photos and many new things to write about, so we'll be busy the next few weeks milking this opportunity for all it's worth.

Things just keep getting better as we start to hear from more and more Classmates.  Please understand that any of you can send us things to share, you don't have to be a named writer.  And, as one Classmate notes, we love to hear about your past, present, and future lives.  I have decided that we will start getting many more visitors since we published last week's story on Tony Thompson.  If people go to the web search engines and look for "crotchless panties" they will be very disappointed when they are directed to our site and find out we were talking about day lillies.

By the way...I set the Old Huntsville magazine the list of "How Long Has It Been" questions which we included last week, and they published it in the current magazine.  Only they didn't include the last question about how long it has been since you visited our web site.

Reunion 2K2!
That's a Wrap!

Observations from the 2K2 Mini-Reunion
by Judy "Fedrowisch" Kincaid
Class of '66

*  Lots of food, fun & fellowship
*  Lehman Williams is crazy - but the good kind
*  The weathermen were totally wrong about the week-end forecast
*  We're eagerly awaiting the publication of Rainer's cake recipe
*  Tommy Towery is crazy - but (also) the good kind
*  Most of us have never grown-up (only out)
*  We have the most understanding spouses in the world
*  I can't believe only three people would admit to knowing "Flea Fly"
*  Terry Preston is also crazy - but (you know) the good kind
*  To the folks that said they were coming but didn't show up - Where were you??
*  To the folks that showed up unannounced - It was great to see you.  Please join us again
*  Looks like we may have some new additions to our reunion planning
committee next time around
*  We thank the understanding folks at Mullins for their hard work &
hospitality.
*  Hope there was a good turnout for the Sunday morning breakfast.  I had really planned to go to church that morning (to thank the lord that we have all survived thus far) but the fact is that I didn't crawl out of bed until 9:30
*  Hope all the out-of-towners had a safe trip home
*  Let's do it again! I had a great time,

(Trivia continued)

The Lee High School educated and self-proclaimed "King of Music Trivia", Jim Bannister, Class of '66, also had the answers correct and reflected on many of the songs which we include. For a bonus, he also identified the two classmates who were in the "clue" pictures. Since Terry "Moses" Preston did not send in an answer this week due to some feeble excuse about being "on the road" and not having a computer, I guess Jim keeps the crown!

From Jim:

Apparently the gauntlet has been tossed....I will do my best !!!!! The Clue photos are Fred Sanders & Johnny
Sharp.....During the early sixties if your name was Johnny or Jimmy it was in half the songs on the radio.....I guess our parents didn't have as much imagination in naming children as later generations...
3. Big Bad John by Jimmy Dean .... A great song but Jimmy Dean's greatest accomplishment is the development of frozen sandwiches that are actually edible. He also has a fabulous boat named "Big Bad John"....
5. Johnny B. Good  by Chuck Berry....The template for generations of rock & roll....Even the Beach Boys blatantly used his rifs on several of their songs.... Chuck's farm & recording studio was just a few miles from where I lived in O'Fallon, MO.
6. Clyde  Ahab the Arab by  Ray Stevens....The Master of novelty songs
7.  Fred  7 Little Girls Sitting in the Backseat....My best memory of this song is a USO Show in 1969 on the beautiful island of Guam.....Joey Heatherton performed it while a group of Playboy Playmates and dancers smooched on a "poor little " sailor pulled from the audience....
8.  Jimmy  Norman  "Norman" by Sue Thompson..... My sister had the 45 of this song....written by John D. Loudermilk who had a bunch of hits during the Muscle Shoals era.
9.  Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey......"Bannister, James Bannister....Licensed to drive"
10. Chet's  Gitarzan  Another great Ray Stevens song

Speaking of #8 which had answers of "Jimmy" and "Norman"...what has happened to Jimmy Norman?

Linda Beal Walker, Class of '66 sent us a note saying "Sorry I'm late, Tommy, but I'm still having computer problems." and the following song comments:
3.    Big Bad John - I think this was Jimmy Dean's only hit before he went into the sausage making business.
6.    Ahab the Arab - Bless Ray Stevens little heart for keeping us laughing.
7.    Fred - everybody was sitting in the back seat kissing and hugging with Fred.
8. (a)     (b) Norman - ooooooooooooooo

(Editor's Note: I'm trying to figure out where we are in our lives when we find it more important to remember poor ole' Jimmy Dean for the food he puts in our tummys more than for the music he put in our ears.  I noted that everyone who answered the trivia about Big Bad John made a comment on Jimmy Dean Sausage!!!!)

Can you name this week's Mystery Classmate?
