Any stories about this Huntsville attraction?

We're "Looking" For You To Join Us On July 20th
For Reunion 2K2

Terry 'Moses' Preston writes:

A flock (is that the right word?) of us Generals will be flying, driving cars, powering boats, and riding flat-bellied wagons back to Huntsville for an informal, impromptu, and just plain fun get together, mini- reunion, or whatever on July 20th.  We are taking the time and expense to come in from California,
Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, and other remote locations, for one primary reason:  To see Lee General friends in Huntsville.

Wayne Deason, Tommy Towery, Susie Wohlschlaeger, Skipper Cook, Lynn Bozeman,
Lehman Williams, Bobby Cochran, Ed and Barbara Wilkerson Donnelly, and Joe Barran have notified either Tommy Towery or myself that you will be
attending, as have many others.  It will be great to see you!  I pray that each of you that travels from out of town will have a safe journey.

Butch Adcock, David France, Joe Schultz, Mike Smith, Ronnie Bishop, Spencer Thompson, Terry Davis, Jimmy & Camilla France Woody, C.E. Wynn, Mary Ann Bond, Sherry Adcock, and Sonny Turner might or might not have responded yet.
If you haven't, let me tell you I really want to see you, too!  I have loved, admired, and respected every one of you for a lot of years, and it will be a personal favor to me if you would come to at least one of the events.

Can any of you possibly get in touch with Richard Lyons, Don Cornelius, Walter Thomas, Connie Mullins, Butch Rolfe, Johnny Harbin, and Alvin McCartt, and tell them about the gathering?  Or just send me their email addy if you have it, and I will personally contact them.

My plans are to arrive in Huntsville the evening of Wednesday, July 17. Here are some phone numbers where I can be reached during the big week:

July 17 - morning of July 20  (Fairfield Inn,
       University Drive) 256-971-0921

I will be staying at the Marriott (256-830-2222) the evening of July 20th, as will Tommy Towery.

The fun begins at Monte Sano State Park picnic area at 11:00 a.m., (Park admission - $1.00 per person).  Look for blue balloons and signs.  Everyone should bring such easy "pot-luck" picnic foods as the Colonel's Fried Chicken, Chicken Fingers, Wings, Sandwich halves, Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, Crab Salad, etc. enough for your family and some to share. We need soft drinks & LOTS of ice and lawn chairs plus an "extra" chair for our out-of-towners to use. Maybe each couple could bring a small package of plates, cups, forks. We'll probably have extras, but then, some people will probably forget to bring them, so it will more than likely work out in the long run.  We plan to begin eating no later than 11:15. Jan and I will plan to arrive no later than 10:00 (earlier if needed or if anyone just wants to meet us earlier and chat) because we want to spend as much time as possible talking to as many friends as possible, and we need to leave at 2:00 to attend a family function in the valley (we will rejoin you at Mullins at 5:00 p.m. or so). I don't have a solution for a possible rain situation, but keep in mind that summer showers normally blow over quickly and wouldn't totally rain us out.

The Mullins gathering will be relatively self-directed, and we have the large back room reserved for 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. You can order off-menu at any time. Around 7:00 the Traveller staff would like to host a discussion about the website, so be prepared to offer comments and ideas.  This is primarily just an evening to spend with old friends. Perhaps our editor Tommy Towery can lead the discussions while the staff (Barbara, Joy, Collins, Fred & Lynn, and myself) are empanelled to answer questions, take down suggestions, etc.  We have the finest high school alumni web page anywhere, and we want to see that it continues to grow and that it continues to include the kinds of things that interest our classmates.  We think it does already, but there's always room for improvement.  Other than that, just chat, joke, and enjoy one another as only our close knit group can.

With your permission Jan and I will leave the Mullins gathering a bit early to go to the Marriott and set up a table or two, grab some chairs and stake out our place in the courtyard near our room.  At the last reunion several dozen of us sat around that courtyard and more than a dozen of us sat out there all night, so we know that it is a comfortable, pleasant place.  Those
who may feel a little more festive can visit the bar/nightclub for a little while (if you can squeeze in).)

So here's the executive version of the activities:

Does anybody remember who was a manager at Henry's? I worked there for a few months during 1964 and an ex- math teacher at Lee named Donald Timberlake was the manager. He called me and gave me a job. He said I was one of the only male student who were nice to him and he was repaying me by giving me a job. Does anybody remember the cook whose last name was Johnson?

Having the event at Mullins, with no Beer, is not a problem. I don't drink any more [than I did in High School]. The thing that causes me concern is; "Moses at the Marriott". Sounds like a religious movie. But, If you can't trust Moses, Who can you trust? When I came back to Bama for a Band Reunion, I think it was 1994, I met Jerry Brewer the night before I
left for a drink and conversation, at a Bar Lounge somewhere on South Parkway. Live band, beer and a dance floor. Could be a nice option after the Pool Party. Someone ask Jerry the name and location.

  From:         "Terry Preston" <mosespreston@earthlink.net>

I remembered the incident at Henry's involving the sign and "Tie me Kangaroo Down, Sport"!  I believe that I was the culprit who wobbled the sign and started the song!  Bobby, I don't think that it was you who got mad at us and asked us to leave, but I can't remember which classmate that it was. Whoever he was, he was probably directed to tell us to leave by the manager,
and got his feelings hurt when we ignored him.  (My humble apologies to whichever classmate that it was). But boy, that was hilarious!!  But can you imagine how disrupting that was for that little hamburger stand?  Hey, we didn't mean any harm.  We just had that same fun-loving personality that is still with us today!  Viva la fiesta!!

Oh by the way, that "Pirate of the Tennessee River" is not me.  Why did you give him my 'master of music trivia' crown?  Tsk, Tsk, How soon they forget!

If anyone is interested in staying at the Marriott, they have a really great rate of $79.00/night.

I can hardly wait!!!!

(Editor's Note:  Well, I remember that I was singing along with "Tan hide when I'm dead, Fred".  This is one of the times that the memories seem to overlap.  I don't remember running around with Moses that much after school at Lee, but this may be one of those times that we both seemed to be placed in harm's way at the same time.  The music trivia master was bestowed upon the individual by himself, when he sent me the photo. By the way, the AAA price for the room is $75.00)

I wasn't involved with the famous "sign" incident at Henry's, although I certainly remember you coming in several times.  Actually, I only worked at Henry's for a few months, right when the place opened for business. I got fired for something, and now I honestly don't remember what it was.B ut it opened the door for my ILLUSTRIOUS career at the Kwik Check on North Parkway & Hiway 72!!!

Saw in last weeks edition that there was going to be a
"mystey Guest" from etowah, NC.  I live in
Hendersonville, NC, not far from Etowah, and was
wondering which classmate lives this close to me.

Enjoy the weekly updates and the memories that are
brought back to the surface of my old & tired brain
from the various trivia and articles.

I am even prompted to start looking through all of my
old "stuff" to see if I can find some of the old
photos I took when I was the photographer for the
annual in 1964.  I will let you know if I find
anything that has survived the last 6 or 8 moves.

A Splendid Life
by Terry 'Moses' Preston
Class of '64

I turned on the television the morning of Friday, July 5.  They were showing footage of various great moments in the baseball life of Ted Williams, and interviews with various people who had been his teammates, members of opposing American League teams, recent Red Sox players, and Tony Gwynn.  This didn't seem at all unusual to me, because I live in southern California and Ted was a native of San Diego, as is Tony Gwynn, and both were great hitters that enjoyed a great deal of media exposure and fan adoration.

But then the commentator broke my heart with just 7 words,  "Ted Williams died today in Inverness, Florida."   I am still crying as I attempt to write this article in tribute to him.

Perhaps some people cannot understand that.  Some people just don't comprehend the love that a poor mill village kid feels toward his heroes. Or the love that a patriotic American feels for a great athlete who twice puts his career on hold to go and fight (and maybe die) for his country.  Or the love and admiration that a simple Christian feels for those who unselfishly help others through the establishment and support of charities.  I am all of the above, and I feel all of that love and admiration for Ted Williams.

I have learned in my life that the best possible way to deal with a tragedy is to weep, and then as quickly as possible to turn it into a positive.  Whenever we lose someone that we love, it is best to quickly transform our memories from sadness into a fond celebration.  Perhaps this article will in some way help me do this, and maybe help someone else who is dealing with a personal tragedy.

Ted is best known as a baseball player, and one of the greatest hitters who ever lived.  Here are some (I will probably overlook a few, because there are so many) of his notable accomplishments:
1.          His lifetime batting average of .345 ties him for fourth place all time.
2.          His career On-Base percentage of  .481 is an all-time high.
3.          His career Slugging Percentage of .634 is second all time.
4.          He holds the all time record for On-Base percentage in a single season.
5.          He twice won the Triple Crown (led league in Batting, RBI, and HR).  No one else in our lifetime has accomplished that.  (Incredibly, he was not voted the MVP in either of those years!)
6.          In 1941 he batted .406.  No one in our lifetime has accomplished that.
7.          He won six batting titles ('41,'42,'46, '47, '57, '58).  Under today's rules he would qualify for a seventh (in 1954 he did not have enough at-bats under then-rules to qualify, having been walked a league-leading 136 times).
8.          Despite giving up five years during the prime of his career, he still had 521 Home Runs, 2654 hits, 1798 runs, 1839 RBI, and 2019 walks.
9.          He became the oldest man ever to lead the league in hitting (at age 40).

Those are incredibly impressive numbers, but he could have accomplished much more if he had not twice put his career on hold to serve his country as a fighter pilot.  He missed the 1943, 1944, and 1945 seasons to serve as a Navy pilot in WWII (beginning just two years after hitting .406 in 1941).  He then missed most of the 1952 and 1953 seasons to serve as a Marine fighter pilot in Korea.  He told a friend before he reported for that tour of duty that he expected to be killed.  He went anyway.  After both absences he shook off the rust and led the league in hitting twice (1947 & 1948, 1957 & 1958).

Ted was beyond a doubt born with a great deal of talent, and he enjoyed the advantages of growing up in San Diego where he could play baseball all year round, but his true greatness stemmed from working so hard and being such an astute student of the game.  He was a tremendous influence upon, and teacher of, the great Tony Gwynn.   And it was his techniques and style that many of us Little Leaguers were taught when we played in 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, etc on our way to becoming Hub Myhand's greatest team ever, at Lee Junior High.  These hitting secrets can still be found today in The Science of Hitting, by Ted Williams and John Underwood (1971).

And he was unstoppable.  If they didn't throw strikes, he would settle for a walk.  No matter where in the strike zone or how they pitched him, he hit.   Wherever they played him in the field, he would still find the holes. Mark Grace, the great first baseman for the World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks was quoted as saying about Ted,  "Have you seen the back of his baseball card?  It's ridiculous!  He hit 521 home runs and he missed five years, for two different wars, in his prime!  The fact that he could hit .400 or .344 when you've got seven fielders on one side of the field, and still find the grass, that's amazing!"

Ted Williams in many ways was larger than life, like the John Wayne of baseball.  He had an uncanny flair for the dramatic.  He trumped Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting steak in 1941 by batting .406 for the year.  (In fact, during the steak Williams out hit DiMaggio .414 to .408).  He single-handedly put an end to the "Eephus" pitch by launching one of them out of the ball bark during an All Star game.  He punctuated his baseball career by hitting a home run in his last at bat.  It is only fitting and characteristic that the great soldier/ballplayer's splendid life was punctuated by his timely departure the day after Independence Day and less than one week from the All Star game.

Off the field, he was the same.  He could never understand anyone giving any less than their best effort in whatever they did.  He is known as one of America's great sportsmen, and we've seen his face and name on many outdoor items at Sears over the years.  He had little time or patience for weakness, and always admonished us to work on becoming stronger.  That is still great advice.

I suppose that I will always become a little teary-eyed when I remember him on the mound in Boston throwing out the first pitch at the 1999 All-Star game, supported by his adoring student Tony Gwynn.  That was a truly great American golden moment.  But every time that I pass the Ted Williams Parkway exits on either I-15 or I-5 north of San Diego, I will be reminded of his splendid life.  And mine.  Thank you for indulging me, my fellow Generals.  I already feel much better.
____________________________________________________

Thanks to Moses for this week's photos and lead story about Ted Williams.  Many of you don't know but Ted was a wingman for John Glenn in the Korean War.  That's where the photo to the right was taken.

The events of the 2K2 (2002) Mini-Reunion are finally shaping up and with the help and hard work of Judy and others in Huntsville and the magic of e-mail, the whole day looks very organized and  exciting.  Since Sue is working, I be coming alone and plan to be in town on Saturday before noon.  We still hope that many of you in Huntsville that have not responded yet will consider joining us.  I know there are some that have not been to a real reunion in many years that would love to see you.

Speaking of Mini-Reunions there's something I've been meaning to pass along to all of you for a while.  Memphis is a fun town to visit.  I don't know if any of you are planning on coming to Graceland or to Memphis during "Dead Elvis Week" next month, but if you do, please contact me and let's see if we can get together.  Or, if you ever make a trip over to Tunica to the casinos, we're only 45 minutes from there and we can drive down and meet you. There's also the Russian Czar exihibit here in town for you more learned souls.  Memphis' Beale Street is always fun with live music and great food.  It's worth the visit just to walk up and down the street and enjoy the crowds.  I've heard a lot people say they were in Memphis - after then had gone home without even calling me. We're always looking to party or just sit and talk with friends like we did with Bobby Cochran last month - you can check our references with him, so if you are planning a trip this way, let me know.  We might even have a place to put you up for the night.

The Men In Our Music
by Tommy Towery

When I think back to the songs of my Huntsville years, most of them seem to have girl names in them (which we'll cover in another trivia contest later).  This week we will try to remember the male names in some of those other songs. Below is the list of trivia songs, along with the years they were recorded. Can you name the males and fill in the blanks and tell who the passages below describe? This should really decide the "King of Music Trivia" between Jim and Moses, or perhaps they are both just princes to someone else who will pull the sword from the stone? Please share your comments and memories with your classmates on one or more of the songs.

1. I want a brave man, I want a cave man ____________ show me that you care, really care for me. (1962)

2. Drink all the water you can hold, wash your hands, cool your feet, but leave a bottle full for others, thank you kindly __________________. (1963)

3. Every morning at the mine you could see him arrive, he stood six foot six and weighed two-forty five. (#1 for five weeks in 1961)

4. He rode easy in the saddle, kinda tall and lean, and at first you thought nothing but a streak of mean, could make a man look so downright strong, but one look in his eyes and you knowed you were wrong. (1963)

5. He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack. Go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track. (1958)

6. He wore a big ol' turban wrapped around his head, and a scimitar by his side. And every evening about midnight he'd jump on his camel named _______...and ride. (Fill in the blank and name the rider) (1962)

How Long
Has It Been?
Original questions by Tommy Towery
Class of '64

I have been receiving a lot of nostalgic e-mails lately with all sorts of thoughts.  I decided that we need our own original ideas to share with our friends and families so I sat down and came up with this list.  I think we should send it to all our non-classmate friends, and then see how long it takes to become a mass mailed e-mail and shows back up on our computers from someone that is not one of our classmates.  If you like these thoughts, you can cut and paste them into an e-mail.

To cut and paste the text :

(1) Put your mouse pointer to the left of the "H" in the "How long has it been since:" line
(2) Press and hold the left mouse button
(3) While holding the left mouse button down, pull the mouse toward you until all the words have a black or blue background
(4) Release the mouse button
(5) While the words are still white with a black or blue background point your mouse at the "EDIT" menu at the top of your screen and click the left button
(6) Click on "COPY"
(7) Now start an e-mail to your friends
(8) Put your mouse in the text box and click once
(9) Then click on "EDIT" and then "PASTE"

Or if you wish, e-mail me and I will send them to you in an e-mail form tht you can forward to your other friends.  Please give the credit to http://www.leealumni.com and we'll see how our hit count goes up.
