A big "thanks" to all of you that have already sent in your reservations and checks.  To those of you that have not done so, but are planning to attend, please do so as soon as possible.  While a few "walk-ins" can be accommodated, we really need to know in advance how many to expect so that the right amount of food can be ordered, enough tables set up, etc.

NOTE:  We have had several '67 graduates ask about attending the reunion.  If you would like to attend, contact Kathy Harris Jones at
jfk19662010@hotmail.com
for a reservation form and details.

Please remember that even if you are not planning to come to the reunion, we would like to have your current contact info for the handbook.  And if you don't want to have your current whereabouts printed in the handbook, let us know that too and we will honor your request to be removed from your class roster.

There are only a limited number of rooms left at the Marriott for August 20 & 21.  As stated in an earlier update, hotel rooms & prices are at a premium this summer due to the Star Wars Exhibit that will be at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.  The rooms at the Marriott are $109.00 per night ($123.20 including tax).  When making reservations, be sure to mention that you are attending the Lee High School 64'65'66 reunion and request a poolside room if at all possible - unless you would rather not have a poolside room.  The Marriott will do their best to honor requests.

Remember, we want to hear from you even if you are not able to attend so that we will have your current contact information for the handbook that will be given out at the reunion.  If you are unable to attend the reunion and would like a handbook, arrangements can be made to send you a copy.

The reunion class contacts are:

Class of ’64 – Linda Taylor
lktaylor731@aol.com

Please send an email to your contact and include: Class year, first name; last name at time of graduation; married name (if applicable); spouse’s name (if applicable); street address; city; state; zip code; home ( H ) or cell ( C ) phone number (which ever you prefer); e-mail address; and occupation.

Even if you do not plan to attend or are not sure if you’ll be able to attend the upcoming reunion, please send in your information.  And please encourage other classmates that you may be in contact with to do the same.

And check the Traveller each week for planning updates.

Lee High School Reunion Registration Form

Mystery Photos

Preaching
by Tommy Towery
Class of '64

With the reunion rapidly approaching, I want to take a few minutes to once again invite you to participate with the rest of us this year. My preacher was talking about church membership and participation declining in the last decade and one of the things he mentioned was that a lot of us just don't invite people to come to church with us any more.

Well, I want you to go to church, but I want to invite you personally to come to the reunion. If you don't take this as a personal invitation, then just e-mail me with your phone number and I will personally call you and extend the invitation.

Some folks don't want to come, because they don't look like they did 45 years ago. Well, none of us do. Look at the two photos above. Which one of these is a classmate of yours? I'd be interested in hearing your guess.

We don't have that much time left to register, so please reconsider.

You may find this hard to believe, but, by my count, we have lost 26 classmates since our last reunion. I'm glad that I got a chance to visit with them last time.

Subject:Barber Shops
Paula Spencer Kephart
Class of '65

My dad, Guy Spencer, and Harry Hunt owned the Twickenham Barber Shop. It adjoined the hotel with a door with a window so the barbershop always knew who was going upstairs with whom. It was outfitted with the newest equipment being sold at the time; red chairs and sinks; black and white tiled floors and a shoe shine stand with a man named Floyd Seay who ran it. He was African American and when my Dad died, he was the only African American at the funeral in 1972.  It was by far the most up to date and newest outfitted shop in town. I can remember my Dad getting all upset at the other barbers in town when they wanted to raise the price of a haircut to two dollars. He would not do it for a long time. It stayed in business after he died until they tore the hotel down. It also had a vacuum system to suction hair away so people would not be all itchy. Daddy used to give the little kids Tootsie Roll Pops; if they had that, they were too occupied to get too upset and cry. He never had too many to cry.  Hope that helps some and please include if you can; there is not one building left where he cut hair left standing.

Daddy never worked for anyone but himself since I have been in this world. Daddy and Harry Hunt owned that barbershop. They were partners. The other barbers worked for them. Daddy always had the back chair. He just wanted it that way.

My dad had one on Cotton Row in the basement and he had a shoeshine guy who worked and left and went to Hollywood where he was adopted by one of the Warner Bros.

After that one, he owned the one next to the Grand Theater. That was not for too long. I remember waiting for him on Sat. nights when they had the "Snuff Dippers Ball" upstairs. Was interesting just watching the characters come and go.

Next he had one on Governors Dr. across from the new Spine Ctr now. He was there for several years and then he and Harry Hunt became partners in the Twickenham Barber Shop. Neither owned it until Daddy died and since it was a partnership, then in 1972, Harry became the owner.

Several mentioned the "Owens" guy at Floyd's, aka Jackson Way Barber Shop.  I think that was Bugs Owens - at least that's what all my family always called him.   I think his "real" name was Calvin Owens, but everyone called him Bugs.
