Memphis, TN - The root beer place has been identified as a second Mugs Up.

There were not enough responses in the music contest to get a good anwer, so I guess they were all winners.

2010 Reunion Info
August 20th - 21st
Huntsville Marriott

Huntsville, Alabama 35805

Next committee meeting on
July 19th at 5:15

By now everyone (that we have some type of contact info on) should have received the reminder letter that was sent out at the last reunion committee meeting.  And yes, we are now aware that the dates were omitted, but everyone that received this letter should have received the initial letter sent out in April.  If not, sorry for the confusion!

This last letter was just a reminder of the upcoming event along with some ideas of local things to do around the reunion dates of August 20 & 21 - especially for those that may be coming in from out-of-town and are not familiar with all the things Huntsville has to offer.

So if you have not sent in your reservation, please do so as soon as possible.  The last group planning session is scheduled for July 19th.  We need to have a good head count of those planning to attend so that the individual committees can finalize their details.

Please remember that even if you are not planning to come to the reunion, we would like to have your current contact info for the handbook.  And if you don't want to have your current whereabouts printed in the handbook, let us know that too and we will honor your request to be removed from your class roster.

As the reunion date gets closer and reunion plans progress, we will be posting those details on the website.  So be sure to check in every week!!

There are only a limited number of rooms left at the Marriott for August 20 & 21.  As stated in an earlier update, hotel rooms & prices are at a premium this summer due to the Star Wars Exhibit that will be at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.  The rooms at the Marriott are $109.00 per night ($123.20 including tax).  When making reservations, be sure to mention that you are attending the Lee High School 64'65'66 reunion and request a poolside room if at all possible - unless you would rather not have a poolside room.  The Marriott will do their best to honor requests.

Remember, we want to hear from you even if you are not able to attend so that we will have your current contact information for the handbook that will be given out at the reunion.  If you are unable to attend the reunion and would like a handbook, arrangements can be made to send you a copy.

The reunion class contacts are:

Class of ’66 – Judy Fedrowisch Kincaid and Kathy Harris Jones

Please send an email to your contact and include: Class year, first name; last name at time of graduation; married name (if applicable); spouse’s name (if applicable); street address; city; state; zip code; home ( H ) or cell ( C ) phone number (which ever you prefer); e-mail address; and occupation.

Even if you do not plan to attend or are not sure if you’ll be able to attend the upcoming reunion, please send in your information.  And please encourage other classmates that you may be in contact with to do the same.

And check the Traveller each week for planning updates.

Mystery Photo

Cany you remember anything about the store in the photo above?

Buddy Miller - Dobson's was a grocery store on Washington St. close to where Lewter Hardware is today. I remember they had baskets of can goods  with out labels for five cents. You did not know what you were getting until you opened them.

Paula Spencer Kephart, Cass of '65 - Dobson's was a deptartment store west of town. It was across the street from the downtown YMCA. It had parking on its roof. Don"t remember how long it was in town; not too long after I got about eight or 10 yrs old. Did not shop there, but thought it was neat that cars were parked on the roof. Could be mistaken, but am fairly sure that was the location.

(Dobson's moved from Washington Street to Randolph, so both locations were right. I remember it being a variety store, but it could have sold unlabeled cans of food as well.)

Mystery Photo
You're Seeing It Here First
by Tommy Towery
Class of '64

Sue and I have been working frantically since last week to get the editing work done on my latest book. We are trying hard to get it finished so that we can make it available when the reunion gets here - and it is going to be tight.

I never realized that when I started this project last year that it would grow to be around 400 pages, with too many illustrations to count. I had thought I would do good to get one that reached 250 pages.

It turned out I had more material than I knew. Much of the content comes from correspondence with all of you since I first started this website. My "with a little help from my friends" qualifier on the front is talking about over 35 of you that are reading this right now. Yes, the material you have sent me for Lee's Traveller will now be preserved in print. Since the Traveller has been going for over 10 years I had a lot to sort through, but I think I have found the stuff I needed to support this project.

I was amazed to find that in all my research, no one could supply me with a photo of Carter's Skateland from the outside, Bradley Cafeteria, Mullin's Cafe when it was on Stevens and 5th, the bomb shelter at the airport, or any with car hops at Jerry's or Shoney's. Those images have been lost to history apparently.

Since the written material was sent to me to publish in Lee's Traveller and it has already been made public, I have taken that action as implied permission to publish it in this book. I will email the list of contributors to anyone who requests it.

The book covers the places we went and the things we did when we were growing up in Huntsville. I know I have not covered everything that could be covered, but I've covered a lot.

There is no exact release date and no price has been set, but it is probably going to be in the $15 range. We will see. There will be a web site set up for orders for those that cannot contact me in person.

Thanks to all of you for helping preserve this bit of history.

DRAFT
NOT FOR PUBLIC
RELEASE
I picked up this copy of a drawing that was done in 1987 when I was on my week-long research trip to Huntsville. Do you know what this place was then and what it was before it looked like this? School and class years with answers please.

One Last Request

I have finished the chapter on things in the Five Points area but think I may have missed one important one and if I can get some information by next week I can still add it in.

I'm looking for stories about Floyd Hardin's barbershop. When I was talking to him he dropped a lot of names of folks I knew. I had my hair cut (when I had hair) at the Twickenham Barbershop by Mr. Crabtree.

If you have anything to share please let me know quickly.

It Was the Epoch Club,
Not the Epic Club

George Vail - The map on the site doesn't include the space that the Epoch occupied.  The store front faced  Andrew Jackson Way a couple of doors down from the apparel shop. There's a TV station in the space today.  The CW I think.  The Hullabuloo was located in the bldg on S. Parkkway that was the Amer. Legion Post( can't remember the post number). The Camelot was on Franklin St just off the southside of the courthouse square.  There was the Charlie Brown Club in a stripcenter on Mastin Lake Rd.( HPD occupys today). There was a teen club on Old Madison Pike in a stripcenter, but it's name escapes me.

Terry Martin, Class of '65 - The Epoch Club was on the corner behind Maurice's Ladies Apparel. One of the bands that played there was the "Gems". Members were Me,Terry Martin, Larry Byrom, Mike Byrom, and Dug Shaffer and later Howard Messer.

Judy Fedrowisch Kincaid, Class of '66 - The teen club at Five Points was the Epoch.  It was located a couple of spaces (not shown on the map)north of the space marked Maurice's Ladies Apparel.  It was the end unit facing Andrew Jackson Way.

I wish you could have been there during that time.  It was a great place!!

Camelot was a block south of the courthouse on Franklin Street.  It was a Huntsville High crowd hangout, but it didn't last very long.

I don't recall the other one you mentioned, but there were also a lot of dances and Battle of the Bands (after hours) at Dunnavant's Mall located at Governors Dr. & the Parkway.  Plus a few at the old Madison County Coliseum.

Can't wait to read your book!!
