Last week's Mystery Photo showed a particular brand of shoes that was the must have shoes of our school days. By the 1960s, it was one of the largest sneaker brands in America.
It easy to see the confusion, since we had to deal with several brands of similiar shoes manufactured by companies such as Converse, Keds, and BF Goodrich. That being said: the photo shows a pair of PF Flyers.
An internet search shows PF Flyers are a brand of athletic shoes that are currently manufactured by New Balance. They were first produced by BF Goodrich in 1937. They had popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, but lost steam during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The brand was purchased by Converse in 1972, but later sold off due to antitrust issues. New Balance bought the rights to the brand in 2001 (which had been dormant since 1992) and resurrected it in 2003.
The style most commonly associated with the shoe is the common canvas-duck sneaker, with cloth reaching above the ankle, and a patch that reads "PF Flyers." This common style is called "Center Hi". They are very similar to the Chuck Taylor All-Stars manufactured by Converse.
PF stands for Posture Foundation. Developed in 1933, this patented insole technology set a new standard in sneaker comfort. The insole technology was first used in BF Goodrich shoes. It involves a wedge-like insert (promoted as the "magic wedge") that moves weight to the outside of the foot, evenly distributing weight, reducing leg strain. As the success of the sneakers with the Posture Foundation insole technology grew in 1937 it became the basis for the brand name, "PF Flyers."
______________
Marty Phillips, Class of ‘66 - With regards to the May 3rd Mystery Photo; the shoes in question are “PF Flyers” for those who couldn't or wouldn't buy the ever popular “Converse All Stars.”

Aaron Potts, First class of Lee - The tennis shoes are P.F. Flyers if my memory serves me correctly.

Wayne Price, HHS Class of '64 - Would those be Converse Allstars?

Gary Hatcher, Class of '66 - I believe that the shoes are Converse PF Flyers. Always wanted a pair of those, but always ended up with whatever Sears & Roebuck had on sale.

Glenn James, Class of '65 - The mystery hi-tops are PF Flyers. I was, at the time, the proud owner of a pair of them, while in junior high at Lee.I must admit I would not want to be seen in a pair now, but my granddaughters each have a pair with fluorescent colored laces.

Eddie Burton, Class of '66 - Are those Converse All stars? I had a pair in High School. I guess it was the preferred Basketball shoe for it's time.

Johnny J. Sharp, Class of '64 - The "Mystery Photo" shoes appear to be the old "Converse" sneakers. I wore out quite a few pairs of these back in the sixties. They aged real good, including holes in the sides. Their only drawback was poor ventilation which resulted in stinky feet until you developed a few holes into the sides! Ha! Ha!
