Memphis, TN -I'm finally back at home now following a month-long vacation to Europe. I apologize for the mix-up with the last few issues, but now that I am back at my real computer and with my standard internet connection, those problems should be eliminated - at least until my next trip overseas.

I appreciate your patience during these problems.

Please include your class year with your e-mails.

Last Week's
Mystery Photo
Last week's Mystery Photo showed a particular brand of shoes that was the must have shoes of our school days. By the 1960s, it was one of the largest sneaker brands in America.

It easy to see the confusion, since we had to deal with several brands of similiar shoes manufactured by companies such as Converse, Keds, and BF Goodrich. That being said: the photo shows a pair of PF Flyers.

An internet search shows PF Flyers are a brand of athletic shoes that are currently manufactured by New Balance. They were first produced by BF Goodrich in 1937. They had popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, but lost steam during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The brand was purchased by Converse in 1972, but later sold off due to antitrust issues. New Balance bought the rights to the brand in 2001 (which had been dormant since 1992) and resurrected it in 2003.

The style most commonly associated with the shoe is the common canvas-duck sneaker, with cloth reaching above the ankle, and a patch that reads "PF Flyers." This common style is called "Center Hi". They are very similar to the Chuck Taylor All-Stars manufactured by Converse.

PF stands for Posture Foundation. Developed in 1933, this patented insole technology set a new standard in sneaker comfort. The insole technology was first used in BF Goodrich shoes. It involves a wedge-like insert (promoted as the "magic wedge") that moves weight to the outside of the foot, evenly distributing weight, reducing leg strain. As the success of the sneakers with the Posture Foundation insole technology grew in 1937 it became the basis for the brand name, "PF Flyers."
______________

Marty Phillips, Class of ‘66 - With regards to the May 3rd Mystery Photo; the shoes in question are “PF Flyers” for those who couldn't or wouldn't buy the ever popular “Converse All Stars.”

Aaron Potts, First class of Lee - The tennis shoes are P.F. Flyers if my memory serves me correctly.

Wayne Price, HHS Class of  '64 - Would those be Converse Allstars?

Gary Hatcher, Class of '66 - I believe that the shoes are Converse PF Flyers.  Always wanted a pair of those, but always ended up with whatever Sears & Roebuck had on sale.

Glenn James, Class of '65 - The mystery hi-tops are PF Flyers. I was, at the time,  the proud owner of a pair of them, while in  junior high at Lee.I must admit I would not want to be seen in a pair now, but my granddaughters each have a pair with fluorescent colored laces.

Eddie Burton, Class of '66 - Are those Converse All stars? I had a pair in High School. I guess it was the preferred Basketball shoe for it's time.

Johnny J. Sharp, Class of '64 - The "Mystery Photo" shoes appear to be the old "Converse" sneakers.  I wore out quite a few pairs of these back in the sixties.  They aged real good, including holes in the sides.  Their only drawback was poor ventilation which resulted in stinky feet until you developed a few holes into the sides! Ha! Ha!

Favorite "City" Song
by Tommy Towery
Class of '64

Our flight back from England put us in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where we ended up renting a car and driving the 1250 miles back to Nashville to pick up our car to return to Memphis. We ended up renting a car that had Sirius Satellite Radio installed and for the 18+ hour drive we passed the time by enjoying the "50s on 5" channel, listening to all the old songs.

I know the satellite technology is not new to most of you, but I have never owned a satellite radio, and the newness of it reminded me of the days before I had cable TV and stayed in a motel that had it installed.

One song that came on during this time was Marty Robbins' "El Paso" and listening to it once again started me to wondering. What song about a city co I like best?

I remember owing the album pictured above and listening to all the songs it contained. I was especially fond of the photo of Marty Robbins on the cover. I suppose it, and the photo of Johnny Mathis on his "Heavenly" album have always been two of my favorite pieces of cover art.

Of course there have been many, many songs recorded about cities and I have enjoyed many of them in my life. At one time "Memphis" was my favorite song, but when I look back at all the songs in my lifetime that I have enjoyed, I guess the classic "El Paso" is still at the top of my list.

Others that I remember are about New York, Galveston, Wichita, San Francisco, just to name a few, but Marty Robbins' classic beats out all of those.

I think one of the reasons must be the pure voice of Marty but the story line of unconquerable love must have hit me at a time in my life when that seemed noble.

So, I poise this question to that small group of you that help support this site through your participation in my silly questions. What is your favorite song about a city, and why do you consider it to be your favorite?

Class of '90

I'm a Lee High graduate (class of 1990) and wanted to pass along some information about my mom (Sandra Parks: maiden name- Sandra Bozeman was her married name) who was a Lee High grad in 1967. My mom mentioned this site quite a bit and she would occasionally send me links to the articles.

Sadly, my mom passed away on February 27 of this year at 60 years old. She passed away in her sleep of natural causes. It came as quite a shock. I realized there may have been others who knew her well from high school that may not have heard about her passing. I believe she used to date Eddie (whose last name escapes me at the moment) and he is frequently a participant of this site. I think he graduated in 66.

Please feel free to pass on the information and to give my email to any who knew my mom that would like to contact me. angelawr@gmail.com

Subject:Gulf Oil Well
Aaron Potts
First Class at Lee

Hey Tommy,

I have only a few minutes. As you well know the oil drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico has taken a few lives and it is pumping about 250,000 gallons of crude oil into the Gulf about every four hours. So, I'll be busy here for the next four weeks working about 20 hours a day on getting this well plugged.

This well is very dangerous and it has taken at least four lives already. I hope there are not any more taken before this thing is brought under control. As an engineer, it will be my job to go to where the rig was located and look for ways to get this thing plugged. I hope to be back in 3-4 weeks.

This week's Mystery Photo question is not to identify the item pictured but to collect something about your own experience with something like it. Do you know in what year the first stereo records were produced? When did you get your first stereo recorder and what do you remember about it. Did you every join a "Record of the Month" club. What records do you remember getting from it? School and class year with answers please.
