The Flea Cheer
by Tommy Towery
Class of '64

I got an email from Linda Beal Walker, Class of '66, with the following request:

"I have a question.  Since you never throw anything away, do you have a copy of the "Flea Fly" cheer we use to do back in the day.  I thought about this today when one of my co-workers and I were talking about the bands in the parade and the beauty revues, etc. and cheerleaders came into the conversation.  She said that Humboldt had a cheer called the "What?" cheer.  I did a flashback to "Flea Fly" Anyone remember the words?

I do remember the cheer and a couple of years ago tried to get a few of the cheerleaders to lead it at one of the mini-reunions. They acted like they had never heard of it. To me it was one of the best and most fun cheers of my high school days.

I sat down and tried to write out the cheer as I remembered it and sent it to Linda. Then I decided to see if there was any internet record of such a cheer. Imagine my surprise when I came upon many, many versions of the cheer, including a recording of it made by "The Red Hot Chili Peppers." Apparently it was a Girl Scout campfire song as well and is more universal than I ever dreamed.

Below is the cheer as I personally remember it:

The Flea Fly Cheer

Start out with rhythm by slapping hands on thighs and then clap them together in slow tempo (one-two, one-two)

After rhythm is going then leader starts the cheer and others echo while continuing the slap-claps.

(Below is phonetic sounds – Never saw the words written)

(Leader) Flea
(Echo) Flea

(Leader) Flea Fly
(Echo) Flea Fly

(Leader) Flea Fly Foe
(Echo) Flea Fly Foe

(Leader) Vista
(Echo) Vista

(Leader) Cumealotta-Cumealotta-Cumealotta-Latta-Vista
(Echo) Cumealotta-Cumealotta-Cumealotta-Latta-Vista

(Leader) Oh, no, no, no, not the Vista
(Echo) Oh, no, no, no, not the Vista

(Leader) Ennie-meanie-hex-a-meanie-ooh-wah-a-whada-meanie, hex-a-meanie-so l-a-meanie, ooh-wah-a-wah
(Echo) Ennie-meanie-hex-a-meanie-ooh-wah-a-whada-meanie, hex-a-meanie-so l-a-meanie, ooh-wah-a-wah

(Leader) A-bee-billy-oh-botten-bo-botten-beaten-daddy (Hissed) ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch
(Echo) A-bee-billy-oh-botten-bo-botten-beaten-daddy (Hissed) ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch

Back to slap-clap routine and increase tempo

Repeat all the chant and pick up speed at the end of each set until you can’t go any faster.

I also found the following version on Youtube which is the closest I could find to the version we did. There is also a version done by the Muppets there!

Steve Shipe

I recall Cecil Fain as my first Principal at Whitesburg Jr High School when I arrived there in the fall of 1965.  He left at the end of May 1966 and a younger principal followed.  He was a quiet-spoken man with a classic smile.  As Joan Baer suggests, cotton picking was a reason for absence, as my fellow six-graders at Athens Elementary in 1964 got early release to help in the fields even at that late date.

Those that want to play golf, ladies welcome, need to let Jerry Brewer know at least three weeks before the Reunion so he can make the appropriate number  of tee times. Maybe we could have a sign-up list on the web-site, or call me – cell 626-347-1469. The tee times will be early assuming the normal weather for Alabama in August, so I would think plenty of liquid refreshments would be in order – that’s a surprise.

I want to thank you Escoe for your reminder of the privledges of getting older. It said just what I needed to hear. It is sometimes hard to remember what a blessing it is to still be here especially when so many you love and care about are gone. May God Bless you and keep you young at heart forever.
