MEMPHIS, TN - It's been a busy week in Memphis and if you watch any sports on TV you will know why. I invite any you non-aligned classmates to root for the Memphis Tigers should you not have a team playing in a tournament. While this issue may seem inappropriate for a high school paper, I am trying to get you to participate by sending your own sports stories.

Please include your class year with your e-mails.
T. Tommy

Patsy Hughes Oldroyd, Class of ‘65 - The picture looks like Bucky Beaver who sang a little advertisement on TV for a toothpaste that went something like…

  Brusha, brusha, brusha,
  With the new Ipana,
  Has a brand new flavor,
  It’s better for your teeth.

I have no idea where I came up with that name, Bucky Beaver, but I do think that it was an ad for Ipana toothpaste. Have a great day!

It's Game Day
by Tommy Towery
Class of '64

By the time you read this the game will be over, but while I am wiriting it, Memphis and the state of Tennessee are gearing up for a major sporting event. On Saturday night, #1 Memphis and #2 Tennessee play in Memphis in a game that will televised on ESPN.  If I did not want to see it so bad I could have sold my two season tickets to the game for almost $1,000 on eBay. Considering I only paid $100 each for the whole season it would have been a hefty profit…but I have to see this game.

With all they hype going on this week in Memphis, I got to wondering how many of you can remember what was the most exciting sporting event you went to. What was the event, where was it, and what did you pay for the ticket?  Was it a Lee High event, a college one, a World Series, Superbowl, the Orange Bowl, or what? This is for a sporting event, not a concert! Are there any special memories of that event that you can share with us?

To add spirit (and a visual aid) to this story, above is a photo of our grand daughter, Caitlin decked out in her Memphis Tigers outfit. Caitlin is Sue’s oldest daughter’s youngest daughter, who lives in Iowa. No matter who wins, this promises to be a historic sporting event in Memphis.

Between your 1964 Silver Sabre, Tommy, and Gudrun Wagner Klauss' photo album, I have no secrets!  I will admit to being the girl on the right in the back row of the 1964 Future Teachers picture.  While I remember a number of the girls in the picture, I haven't stayed in touch with them; so, I don't know if any became teachers.  Ironically, I had no plans to become a teacher at the time the picture was made or for years afterward--but I did become a teacher.

As I remember the F. T. A. at Lee, it was just another activity.  Once I was in college, I felt that the best career for me was to become a lawyer.  That I did, and I practiced law in Birmingham for about five years after I finished law school.  Bill and I married during that time, and after a lot of eighty-hour work weeks, I "retired" at the ripe old age of thirty.  The teaching opportunity at Cumberland Law School of Samford University came rather unexpectedly, and I thought I'd give it a try for a semester.  I began teaching one class in 1979.  As it worked out, I loved it, and I became a full-time member of the faculty for the following twenty-four years.

Teaching at the college or graduate school level was a real treat.  My students were very bright and engaged, and the hours were amazing.  Altogether, it was a very fulfilling career and perfect for me.  A number of my students have gone on to high-profile careers, including Charlie Crist as governor of Florida, Robert Aderholt as a U. S. congressman and Pat Dye, Jr. as a most successful sports agent.  Our Fami-Lee will be most interested, however, in the fact that I taught Hub Harrington, LHS '66, and , yes, Hub made an A!

I just wanted to share that I was blessed with a new grandson on Sunday, February 17th.  That makes 3 grandsons for me born on the exact same day - Race is 6, Zane is 2 and Hayden was just born.  What are the chances of that happening again? (All toll I have 7 grandsons and 1 granddaughter, with another grandson due the end of May.)

Subject:Reunion
Charlie Hancock

You're probably saying "This guy is a broken record!"
I plead no contest.

May I suggest the reunion committees consider having a reunion maybe in April or October. I recall that several people in my class (1966) were only temporary residents in Huntsville. After the Saturn project was completed, many families moved back North again. We are Yankees now. We can't deal with your heat and brutal humidity that was nothing at all when we were teens. August in the Heart of Dixie is just too brutal. I love all my friends from that era. But I can't go in August.

I'll bet having a reunion when the weather is more moderate would also help to draw out some local alumni too. Please consider this. In August, it's too hot to leave the house or the A/C car. I'd love to visit in October. It's still nice but not nearly so brutal.  Most years anyway.

There is no way I can go to Alabama in August, regardless of which year it's held.

Is staying with the Commercial theme, who are these guys and what was their product? They had names even though we might not know them (like which nephew was Huey, Dewey, or Louie) individually. Can you tell me left to right (they have been mixed up) who they were and what they sold? Please put your class year with your answer.
