Hope all of you are enjoying football season. I know you Tide fans are! The only problem for me is that it eats up my Saturdays and I end up staying up late to get the Traveller out on time. But here it is.

Please include your name and class year with your e-mail to me.

Last Week's
Mystery Classmates
Carolyn Burgess Featheringill, Class of '65 - One of the holdover mystery classmates is Judy Light Fudge, Class of  '65 who's appropriately--and fashionably--dressed for the 97-degree temperatures we experienced during the reunion.  With her; of course,  her husband Ronnie Fudge who also attended Lee at one time. Thanks for the solution to the "School Days" puzzle and congratulations to Judy Bills on her good memory!

Sarajane Tarter, Class of '65 - I've been out of town or I would have identified the mystery couple sooner. They are Judy Light Fudge and her husband Ron. I would have remembered those beautiful blue eyes from our school days but I also got to see them when Judy and Ron registered at the hotel during the reunion weekend.

Don Wynn, Class of '67 - Without doubt, this photo is 'the center of the known universe' which is; of course, Five Points.  Why would you ever need to shop anywhere else with Zesto's, Walgreens and the Star Market in one small area?

Editor's Note: Looks like Don "Wins" the contest with his brothers. Neither one of them responded to this mystery.

Subject:Last Week's Store Question
Bobby Cochran
Class of '64

Hi Tommy!  I've been in the process of switching internet service providers, so I may be a bit late on some of the questions.  This refers to the issue of October 10th.

The store that you were inquiring about, I believe, was the FIRESTONE TIRE STORE, owned and operated by Buck Larkin.  In 1956, the Larkins lived on Hermitage Street, on the north side, just west of the dirt road known as "Colorado Street."

Buck's son, Elvis, was a couple of years older than me and my other neighbors, David Holmes, Bill Weiler, Freddy Atkins, and others.  Bill and I lived on Harrison Avenue.

Some of you may remember a fellow by the name of Raymon Wilenski - he lived on the corner of Hermitage Street and Colorado.  I heard some years ago that he had become a Medical Doctor and moved to New York.  Two doors up from Raymon lived Wade Russell, who operated the Star Market at 5 Points for many years.

We were a varied group, in ages as well as demeanors.  But somehow we managed to get along with each other MOST of the time.  Elvis could be very intimidating because of his size, but he was truly a "gentle" man.  Elvis eventually became a professional golfer, and a good one.  The last time I saw him was about 15 years ago, he was the head Pro at the fancy golf/swimming place in Decatur - can't remember the name.

So Larkin's Firestone Store would be the place, and Elvis Larkin, Jr., would be the closehanger person.

Editor's Note: Bobby, you know I never tell the whole of the story so that I can get people to respond. While you are absolutely correct about it being the Firestone Tire Store, there is more to the story than that.

Actually, the store was officiallly named Larkin-Davis Firestone, I believe. And while you are also correct about Elvis Larkin (the only person I ever knew or heard of who named Elvis besides that other Elvis) I was actually trying to solicite a few comments about the "Davis" child of the joint ownership.

The person to whom I was referring was Bob Davis. I went to church and school with Bob before I moved into the Lee district. I went to East Clinton and to Huntsville Junior High with him and he went on to go to Huntsville High School.

Bob's dad took advantage of his son's connections and he was the one who would hire us to go door-to-door and stuff the circulars on people's porches. It was always a lot of walking, a little heavy carrying when we first started the routes, but untaxable and unclaimed income.

Bob was one of my early friends and I saw him last about eight years ago when he came to Memphis. He had read my book and wanted to visit. We went down to Beale Street and had a wonderful time with our old memories.)

Does anyone know the status of the reunion pictures?  I ordered the picture a couple of days after the reunion, mailed my check, and have called repeatedly to ask the status of the mailout but never receive a call back, only an answer machine.  What is the situation on the pictures?

Kathy Harris Jones
Class of '66

For those who have a handbook, I have found an error that you might want to correct.

Belinda Christian (Colbert), class of '66,  email address :
1colbert@bellsouth.net.
In the handbook, it appears as the lowercase letter "L"  rather than the number 1.

If you would like a Reunion Handbook, please send $5.00 to Lee High Handbooks, P O Box 527, Huntsville AL 35804.

Dust Off The Cobwebs!

Class of '64

This week we leave the reunion behind for a bit and offer you a sign of things to come. Actually this "sign" was spotted by me on a trip this summer and I snapped a photo of it so that I could see if any of you might recognize it.

When I first saw it, I thought I recognized it, but am not exactly sure. Although it is not as famous as some other ones, I do hope that some of you might be able to identify it and make me feel a little better about my memory.

So, what do you say?  Can you tell us what establishment this sign advertises? I hope this might be the start of a week or two of comments about this subject.

We're running out of points of interest from the 1962 aerial photos, but this one should be one you can get. Send in the identity and any story you want to include as well.
