For those that keep asking, we are working on setting up a Golf Match for Saturday morning. We don't have a time or place yet, as I have to contact Sarajane's brother to see if he can help us, and I just haven't had time this week.
To help get a head count, if you will please send me an e-mail with a Subject of "GOLF" I will collect all the names and see what kind of count we have. Send it to ttowery@memphis.edu
We're musical this week in the paper and hope that you enjoy what we have for your entertainment.
Please include your name and class year with your e-mail to me.
T. Tommy

of Missing Classmates
Click on the button below to view all of the Classmates that have been identified as "missing" by the Reunion Committee. We know that many on this list are not really missing, since at least one of the ones identified is a staff member of Lee's Traveller. The list is made up of those that the committee does not have current information for in their files. They would like for everyone to please check the list. See if you have friends, sisters, brothers, cousins or anyone else on the list that you can contact and get them to send in their info.

On the web I found the following discussions about the placement of the arms of John, Paul, George, and Ringo:
"There has been some discussion about the cover of Help! and whether or not the Beatles' hand positions spell anything. So I dug out my old Boy Scout manual, found the semaphore table, and compared it to my CD, which, as I understand it, reflects the original British album cover. Now, by various accounts, the boys' images may have been reversed, reordered, or even flipped before being committed to the album cover, so there are several possibilities. I'll leave it to those of you with more insight than I to determine what they MEANT to say, but I can tell you what they ARE saying.
First and foremost, no matter what order or left-right orientation they are arranged in, they do NOT spell H-E-L-P. However, in a mirror- image, to a lenient eye, they do come close to spelling L-P-U-S, though they wouldn't win any merit badges with their form. This has been suggested as the real intented message, so I'd be inclined to believe the image is indeed reversed. (Added clue: both Ringo and Paul appear to be wearing watches on their RIGHT arms. (Yes, I know Paul's left-handed, but it seems more likely he'd wear his wristwatch on the left than that Ringo would wear his on the right, unless they do that backwards in England too, just like they drive on the wrong side on the road)."
A second contributor to this discussion added:
"...Evidence is available which shows that the cover photo on the HELP! album (both the US and UK versions) was *not* intended to spell HELP, nor any other message, in semaphore. Furthermore, simple research shows that the cover photo as a whole is *not* a mirror-image of the original photo, although some of the Beatles' individual images are reversed.
The photographer who conceived of and executed the photo, Robert Freeman, confirms that no semaphore message was intended. Freeman writes:
...I had the idea of semaphore spelling out the letters HELP. But when we came to do the shot the arrangement of the arms with those letters didn't look good. So we decided to improvise and ended up with the best graphic positioning of the arms. (Freeman, Robert _The Beatles_, Barnes & Noble, NY, p. 62)
This improvisation of arm positions probably explains the Beatles' "bad form". The intention behind the arm positions was good "graphic positioning", not good semaphore. Thus, some liberties probably were taken in arm positions, and adherence to "good form" semaphore was a secondary priority (or possibly not of any concern whatsoever)."
Regarding the use of reversed images on the covers, neither the US nor the UK cover photo is reversed in its entirety. However, the individual images of John, George and Ringo are reversed on the UK cover, while Paul's image is not. (Note that on the US cover, only John and Ringo's images are reversed, and the order in which the Beatles are standing is altered.)
The use of reverse images (and non-reversed images) on the UK cover can be confirmed by comparison with film footage and other photos taken during the filming of HELP!
Back to our contest and no longer quoting the web sites: To confuse things even more, there does not seem to be a "right" order even for the way they line up. Below are photos from two album covers, each with different arrangements of the Fab Four.

What a mess a simple little trivia question can be! What seemed like something so simple has turned out to be quite complex in its own way and puts it in line with the "Paul Is Dead!" backwards-playing-record urban legend.
To start the answer process, Carolyn, was the first one with the "maybe correct" answers. At least her's are the first we received and are correct by one standard. That's the beauty of standards, we have so many to choose from.
Carolyn Burgess Featheringill, Class of '65 - Help! That's the movie and it's what we're going to need if these Lee-Bay items get any more difficult! The movie came out in 1965, a very good year. The Fab Four need to re-arrange themselves, using your number system, in the following order: 3, 1, 2, 4. Neither arrangement has any particular logic.
Were they pulling an early version of "YMCA" and trying to spell HELP? If so, they didn't do that as well as they did almost everything else. I'm just guessing on the bonus question, but this won't be the first time. The theater would have either been the Lyric or the Martin; the Grand wouldn't have been in the running. Since the Lyric was such a landmark and sort of the "obvious" answer, I'm going with the Martin. Congratulations on the anniversary!

Sarajane Steigerwald Tarter, Class of '65 - This weeks item would be a poster advertising the movie Help that came out in 1965. The correct order of Beatles on the poster is 3, 1, 2, 4. I'm guessing that the movie was shown at the Lyric in Huntsville.

Jeff Fussell, Class of '66 - With a couple of hundred hits on the Traveller site before me, the brass ring is most likely gone -- but here's what I remember:
(1) That's a graphic of the Beatles standing in front of (or on top of) each letter of the word "HELP" which is the movie in question. (2) The year was 1965. (3) The order is 3-1-2-4 and (4) I somehow remember this being shown at the Martin Theater.
One of my favorite Beatles trivia sites had a piece about the implied semaphore message. The common wisdom is that the positioning was strictly for photographic effect. Each character struck a semaphore pose, but the resulting message is meaningless. One conspiracy theorist suggested that -- with a very lenient interpretation of form -- each character posed a mirror image of "LPUS" (Help Us). Maybe if we played it backwards...

Last Week's Questions
The above item was taken from a poster for sale on e-Bay. We need to know
(1) What movie was it advertising?
(2) What year was it released?
(3) This is not the way that the men were arranged. They have been moved around. What is the correct numerical order for the sequence?
A bonus question...(4) Which theater in downtown Huntsville hosted this movie?
The first classmate with the correct answers will be officially recognized next week.

So, there appears to be no "correct" order. That upsets me since I had worked out the graphic below based on what I thought was the correct order and is, in fact, one of the correct orders. Here's how I was able to remember them based on the order of the bottom album above.
In keeping with our musical theme for the week, the above photo was sent in by Butch Cryder. Does anyone recognize anyone in the photo? Any memories you want to share about this subject:

You asked what one thing I always wanted to do, and here's my answer: I ALWAYS wanted to write for a newspaper and then write a book. I enjoyed working as a typist for the Traveller while we were at Lee, but never in a million years did I dream that I'd be signing on as staff writer in the year 2001! And so, M.I.E., I thank YOU for giving me the opportunity to write for the paper and for all the very kind comments about my work. God willing and the creek don't rise, we'll still be doing this for 40+ more years! Thanks for your dedication and perseverance.

So I opened the Eckerd's ad, and what did I see? JUST BORN Marshmallow Peeps! Now this is just going too far. And while we're on the subject of making friends with your food, what's up with the Pepperidge Farm Goldfish ads? "The snack that smiles back -- goldfish." I noticed that the "They smile when you eat them," commercial seems to have bit the dust. Wonder how many kids THAT one traumatized? (I only know of one of us, but I'll bet there are more.)
Save a Peep -- eat a big ole, white, fluffy, regular marshmallow!!!!

Just a note to let you know what I great job you all are doing. I read the Traveller every week and enjoy it so much. I don't have the history in Huntsville like so many of you since we arrived there in 1962, but I still enjoy all the stories. I have a friend here in Florence who graduated from Coffee High School and she is very envious of the website.
Thanks again and looking forward to the reunion.

Tommy, I just can't thank you enough for the great site! My congrats to you and your fine staff!!! Refreshing that y'all exclude politics and many of the hot-button issues off the table.. Great fun looking at this site. I've even bragged to my other classmates from Vestal High(Vestal, NY) about the site!
Got another reason for writing. I noticed an e-mail about looking for Axel Hines. Tried to e-mail info to spiritman with no luck.. so thought I'd give the site the info & go from there: I've bumped into Axel on & off over the years, last time 2000 at the club under the old Dallas Club/Aquadic Club location(Oakwood & Jordan). His wife was playing bass-guitar with the "Crawlers" Ray Brand, John Huber, & Billy Teishmiller. If this individual can contact one of the other members maybe they can find Axel. I'm almost sure that Billy still works at Robbins Music Store in HSV.
Well, guess that's all for now.. Great work, y'all. Peace.
(Editor's Note: We have gotten in touch with Axel, but the person who was looking for him left a bad return e-mail so we cannot pass it alone.)

Out Sick
submitted by Bobby Cochran
Class of '64
Most of us have forgotten that Lee High School had a policy that the parents were required to call the school if a student was to be absent for the day.
One day a well-known student decided to skip school and go to the mall with her friends. So she waited until her parents had left for work and called the school herself.
"Hi, I'm calling to report that Alice is unable to make it to school today because she is ill."
Mr. Hamilton's secretary at Lee replied, "I'm sorry to hear that. I'll note her absence. Who is this calling please?"
