The Numbers of Lee
By Tommy Towery

We all seemed to have a good time with the numbers trivia contest last week.  All of the questions were answered correctly  but not one single classmate got all of the answers correct.  Above is a collection of photos which show you where the answers came from. A couple of you only missed one question, which was a very good showing.  Below I have listed the correct answers as judged by the staff of Lee's Traveller.  In the mail section I have included a few of the more "creative" answers. Everyone who entered the contest was given an equal chance of winning the prize, regardless of the number of correct answers.  The winner was Bob Alverson, who was selected by the computer.  Bob wins his choice of a CD from the Souvenir Shop, or the 1966 Yearbook CD when it is completed.  Thanks to all of you who participated.  In the left column you will find this week's Trivia Contest. Try your luck (and tax your memory) on these questions.

A.    640 and 1240 were the Civil Defense Radio stations you were to tune to in
emergencies.  Marked with triangles on your AM dial. Rember, "If this had been an         actual emergency you would have been instructed to tune to 640 or 1240 on your           radio dial."?
B.    77 Sunset Strip - "Kookie, Kookie, lend me your comb."
C.    Highway 72
D.    Route 66 - The TV show about the two guys crossing the country in a Corvette
E.    1550, WAAY Radio AM Frequency (Kilocycles back then - pre Kilohertz)
F.    10, 2 and 4  The times to drink Dr.Pepper
G.    47 The first two numbers on Madison County Automobile Tags
H.    231/431 Highways that made up The Parkway

From Our Mailbag...
(Editor's Note:  I saw no reason to put all the same answers to all of the Numbers Trivia questions over and over in each person's e-mail, so I only included the ones that seemed to add a little something more than just the right answer.  All of the answers given were not printed if they were just "answers". Thanks for all the contributions.)

What do you mean "every once in a while"?  Seriously, Janyce and all, the site is updated every week, so if you want to stay on top of things, then you should check in each week.  If you are a visitor that is not registered on the Mailing List, then you don't receive the weekly notices of changes.  All you have to do to keep getting reminded is to click on the Join The Mailing List button and put in your e-mail address and you'll be notified.  But, every once in a while is better than never.  LOL!)

  From:         Gail W Rogers <gailandronnierogers@juno.com>

Hi all!

Maybe I am more out of it than I thought I was..........but I knew nothing about the logo change.  My thoughts are: First of all it strikes me as very dumb!!!!!!There was only one General Lee.........to add four more Generals seems like a great example of taking "political correctness"  to a ridiculous extreme!!!!!!!!  Secondly, my philosophy is:  "If it ain't broke don't fix it"!  I do not feel that the logo was "broke".  Oh well, no one consulted me..........

Regarding the numbers:  the only ones that have any meaning for me are:

47 was the year of my birth
231/431 are highway numbers that go through HSV
66 was the year of my first marriage

I am really interested to find out what meaning the other numbers have.

I guess that all of us don't care for change, especially changes that involve our past.  Most people have their best past memories of their high school days as evidenced by the many tv shows and movies about that subject.   Even my 10 year old son prefers "listening to the oldies" radio stations and cds when we travel in the car.

Change just because someone thinks that it is more "Politically Correct" to do it another way because of "multiculturism" seems to be the common "thing" in our current society.

Here are my guesses for the list of numbers

A. 640 or 1240  If I remember correctly these were the frequencies of 2 of the "other" radio stations in Huntsville.  I think that 1240 was the easy listening station.

B.  77  Seems to me that this was one of the drive in theaters

G.  47  Totally at a loss

H.  231 / 431  Highway 231/421 or Memorial Parkway.  Shoney's, A&W Rootbeer, Parkway City.  Lots of nights driving up and down the roas playing shoney-go- round

I didn't know about the new logo! My opinion is that if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Oh, well! Guess I'm showing my age, huh?

Note to C.E. regarding hot tamales: Yes, the big white house is the place! The cart used to set out in front of the house. I think the man used to peddle the hot tamales from the cart around town. Were they not the best in the world? I have a recipe from someone who said he used to work there, but he didn't include the ingredients for the liquid in which they were cooked. Perhaps one day I'll try to duplicate them. I'll let you know how they turn out. Do you remember Phillip's?

Carol Jean, it was wonderful to hear from you! Sorry to hear about the rotator cuff. Hope you are doing well now. It was great to hear about Hub, too!

Note to J.R.: What's wrong, J.R.! Haven't learned how to use a computer yet? How about a note from you on the website????

Another note re: Angels in Waiting: No, we never know when someone we love is an angel in waiting. Some of you know that Ed and I lost our son, Chris, 9 years ago next month, at the young age of 22. I'm thankful that we had him in our lives for 22 years, and not 22 days, weeks or months. But you never stop missing someone you love -- sometimes it seems as though it happened yesterday. So tell the people you love how much you love them, and tell them often. No one ever expects that today could be the
last day.

Let's all continue to pray for our friend who is ill and family members.

Love to all of you,
Barbara Wilkerson Donnelly

In response to the Number Trivia Contest:
A.  AM radio frequencies

C.  Hwy 72 drive-in theater

F.  Dr Pepper

I think the new logo stinks.  I guess it is more politically correct, but give me a break!  I believe Robert E. Lee was a general in the U.S. Army before the Civil War.  He was certainly a West Point graduate and a leader in this country.
Why do we have to "sanitize" everything in history?  There are a lot of bad things that Americans have done, but we have done a lot more good things.  We should be proud of our country and our heroes.
Whew!  I feel a lot better now!!!  (Tommy, you may have opened a real can of worms here!)

I just wanted to say "thank you" again for all your efforts in putting together the web page.  Because of you I get daily or weekly e-mails from old friends.  Most of these old friends I haven't seen in over 30 years. Yet when we talk, its as if all those years fade away and we're back at Lee.Its great!

You have a keen eye for detail Mr. T.  I knew some of them (numbers) right away -1550 was the only radio station to listen to in town,  But doggone Tommy, I was blown away by many of the others.  I think that the article on movie theatres in town took me way back in time.  The balcony of the Lyric Theatre and Woody's Drive-In immediately come to mind

Okay oh great harrasser,  my guess on the numbers

A. 640 or 1240  AM Radio stations (for civil defense notification?)
B. 77                Highway 77 (goint east from Huntsville?)
C. 72                Highway 72, I know this one!  It ran near LHS on the north.I worked at                           the Kwik Check at the intersection of 72 and 431
D. 66                Route 66 - Television Program, 2 guys in a 'vette

I'll be interested in seeing the results.

Thanks,

Feeling Old?

Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin put together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of this year's incoming freshmen.

Here's this year's list:

The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1983.

They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.

Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.

The CD was introduced the year they were born.

They have always had an answering machine.

They have always had cable.

They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.

They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.

They never heard: "Where's the Beef?" ; "I'd walk a mile for a Camel" ; or "de plane, de plane".

They do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. is.

Michael Jackson has always been white.

McDonald's never came in styrofoam containers.

They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

Do you feel old yet? Pass this on to the other "old" people in your life.

  No booze. None. Never.
No TV. No cable TV. No satellite TV.

  No Hooters!!
  No Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.
No organized sports of any kind. That's right -- NO sports!!!
Women have to be completely covered and wear veils. No thongs.
