The Scene
Visible from the interstate thanks to a mighty red "V," the Varsity sells a penny-candy confection of Joe College rah-rah and soda fountain romance. Flashy neon signage sets up streamliner stainless steel, curving glass brick walls and a bright, noisy counter that's longer than a football field. Top it all off with carhop service and a punchy, lingo-slinging counter staff. It's more of an Atlanta treasure than Scarlett O'Hara's grave.

The Food
The kind of place where the food's better because it's what you grew up with, the Varsity's home to non-homogenized, pre-Mickey D's fast food with its own specialized vocabulary. Favorites include the chili cheese steak (a diminutive hamburger with chili and American or pimiento cheese), crispy batterfried onion rings and a defiantly messy slaw dog. Wash it all down with the locally renowned FO ("frosted orange"--think a tricked-up orange slurpee) and finish with a fried apple pie. It's greasy fun food that's good when you're sober, even better when you're not. - Michael Longshore

Next Week's Issue

Next week's issue might be a little later than normal. Sue and I are headed to Hilton Head for two weeks vacation and I will have to update the site via a slower telephone modem connection rather than through my faster cable modem.  But, I will try my best to get the site published on time.  If you're in the Hilton Head area, drop in.

The Beatles: In My Life
By John Lennon and Paul McCartney

There are places I remember all my life,
Though some have changed,
Some forever, not for better,
Some have gone and some remain.

All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall.
Some are dead and some are living.
In my life I've loved them all.

But of all these friends and lovers,
There is no one compares with you,
And these mem'ries lost their meaning
When I think of love as something new.

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before,
I know I'll often stop and think about them,
In my life I'll love you more.

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before,
I know I'll often stop and think about them,
In my life I'll love you more.
In my life I'll love you more.

    Happy New Year to all of you! This is the first day of the rest of your life. Remember how profound a statement that was when you first heard it?  Today many things make a lot more sense than they did when we first were exposed to them. I was listening to the radio right before New Year's and heard this oldie, and for once I paid attention to the words instead of just the melody.  I thought how appropriate these words and thoughts are for a group such as ours and especially at the start of a fresh new year.  If you just read the words above and didn't digest them, then go back and read them again - especially the first two verses. We spend a lot of time here remembering places and people which may have changed or still remain. Do you remember how excited and turned on you were the first time you heard the Beatles?  I do.
    So, to start off the new year, I just wanted to share these thoughts with you and perhaps make you stop and reflect on these ideas in this time of our lives.  I hope each of you had a very happy holiday and that the coming year brings all of us closer to the dreams and hopes we shared during our high school days.

Tommy,
Thank you for your hard work and dedication.  It's not like you don't have another job too!!!
I doubt that there is another alumni site to compare.  Of course, there was probably no other school to compare either!
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be connected..........at an age in our personal lives where the past seems to have taken on a new significance........and at a time in our nation when that "connectedness" seems suddenly more meaningful.
Looking back, may we be filled with gratitude;
Looking forward, may we be filled with hope;
Looking upward, may we be aware of strength;
Looking inward, may we find peace.

Tommy,

Can you put out a 'tickler' for interest in a mini-reunion for the Dallas/Fort Worth area?  Do we have an address list broken down by geographic area?

Happy New Year.

Rick Simmons

(Editor's Note: We do not have a geographic breakdown of Classmates, but that would be a great thing to do and will be put on our to-do list. Anyone in the DFW area that is interested please e-mail us.)

Hi Tommy,
I am trying to catch up after our recent move from St. Louis to a small town 2 hours South of there, Poplar Bluff.  My husband changed jobs and so here I am.  Anyway, the home computer is hooked up now and I will be in touch more often.   My new email
address is:         susieshere36@hotmail.com
Was just looking through the archives trying to see what I have been missing.  Really enjoyed the wedding pictures from Jennifer and Craig (congrats!) and the mini-reunion pictures from Mullins.  It was cruel to include the one of the chilidogs!!  Can't say I have
any memorable New Years memories.  That was one event that never seemed to be as much fun as it was supposed to be.  I did think of one funny Drive-in memory though.  I had a date with a guy who had a red corvette and was really looking forward to that ...drive-in, top down, warm summer breeze...it would be ideal.  I will just say  that things did not go quite as planned. Somewhere between the realization that his car did not have a muffler and the polite request from the Drive-in employees that we may want to wait somewhere else until the line was shorter because the people behind us could not breath due to the clouds of black smoke coming from the back of the car, the romance was sort of gone from the evening.
The school bus was the scene of several memorable and not-so-memorable times of my life also.  I've lost some of the details, so you will have to consult the other half of my brain, Bob Cochran '64, who remembers what kind of starch the bus driver liked in his
shirts.  Anyway,  "Bobby" and I rode the bus down Pulaski Pike to our houses.  If you missed the bus, tough luck, it was too far to walk.  Somehow he was always one of the first ones on the bus and I was always lagging behind.  By the time I was on the bus,
dragging my books and giant purse, there would be no seats left.  He would always come to my rescue and let me put my books on his lap and protect me from the bus bullies.  Sometime in 1964 I started driving to school which was fun, but the bus rides still are a
very fond memory.
Glad to see the Zesto is on the mend.  Wonder if they will change the menu when it reopens?  Hope not.  Welcome back from the land of the unconnected, Skip.  It must be Karma, but just about the time your name resurfaced on the website and you talked to
Bob, I ran across your picture while I was moving.  But, luckily, the truck didn't crease it very bad, so I cleaned it off and stuck it back in a box.
Everyone take care and best wishes to all for a great 2002!!
