Veterans Day Additions
by Tommy Towery
Class of '64

Even though this site was originally designed for the Lee High School graduating classes of '64-'65-'66, over the years it has grown to include many other classes and even other schools. I attribute that fact to it being a unique site full of information and memories to a group of us from Huntsville who spent many years changing schools and school districts due to the rapid growth of Huntsville's population.

This week I have received several other emails concerning the tribute to veterans we did for Veterans Day this year.

I received the following ones this last week.

Max Kull, Class of '67, and Lee's Traveller Sports Editor from 66-67 wrote, "Nice to see you remembering Stanley Lewter.  He was a friend and my lab partner in Mrs. Hall's physiology class.  Nice guy.  He's buried at Gatlin Cemetery near Ardmore.  I ran across his headstone one time when I was visiting my father's.  Took a picture and uploaded to the Findagrave website here:"

For those of you not familiar with this web site, you might find it interesting.

What is Find A Grave?

Find A Grave is a resource for finding the final resting place of family, friends, and 'famous' individuals. With millions of names and photos, it is an invaluable tool for the genealogist and family history buff. Find A Grave memorials can contain rich content including photos, biographies and dates. Visitors can leave 'virtual flowers' on the memorials they visit, completing the online cemetery experience.

Find A Grave's primary purpose is a graves registration website.

Find A Grave's secondary purpose is a memorialization/remembrance site.

Find A Grave's tertiary purpose is a genealogical resource.

If a listing or contribution corresponds with only the primary purpose, it has fulfilled its part of Find A Grave's mission and is not required to correspond with the secondary and tertiary purposes. Fulfilling the other two is welcomed, encouraged and deeply appreciated, but as far as Find A Grave's purpose goes, a memorial page isn't lacking if it does not.

Find A Grave has grown to be a wonderful and valuable resource for genealogy and genealogists, but that is adjunct to its main purpose.

Visit the site at http://www.findagrave.com

I also got another email about a member of the Class of '67.

Subject:Vietnam Casualty
Jim Emerson
Class of '67

I am a member of the Lee High School class of 1967.  I have enjoyed the Lee's Traveller website for several years.  In recent weeks, several members of the LHS Class of '67 who gave their lives while serving in Vietnam have been mentioned and honored .

I would like to add a good friend and fellow classmate to that list:

Ronnie Wayne Smith (USMC)
Tour began Dec. 19, 1967
Casualty was on May 28, 1968
In Quang Tri, South Vietnam
Hostile, Ground Casualty
Gun, Small Arms Fire.

Thanks for all your good work.

The last one I got was from Ray Walker, Class of '64 who sent me his information.

"Add my name to your list.  I was in the Army Reserve for 27 years.  The 3392nd  U.S. Army Reserve School.  Our unit trained many of the Lee Generals.  I  retired as a Master Sergeant."

We will continue to add to the list as additional information is received. Thank all of you for your service.

Sally Dawley Stroud, Class of '65 - Isn't this week's mystery item an Electrolux vacuum cleaner?
___________________________________

Karen Tucker Oliver, Class of '65 - This very much resembles an Electrolux cannister vacuum cleaner that my Mama had and I used.  Wish I could say there were fond memories!  It had a hose that was not quite long enough as I recall.  It sucked - what more can I say?
______________________________

Glenn James, Class of '65 - The Mystery Photo is of an Electrolux vacuum cleaner. My aunt and uncle had one like the picture, it was all metal. My mother bought a newer model after we moved to Lakewood in 1959, it has some plastic on it. I have it now and it is still works great.
__________________________

Carolyn Burgess Featheringill, Class of '65 - A mystery item I recognize -- an  Electrolux vacuum cleaner!  My parents had one almost like this when I was growing up.  I think that they got it shortly after they were married in 1941, and it was still chugging along when I went away to college in 1965!
___________________________

John Turrentine - The mystery photo has to be an Eletrolux cannister vacuum cleaner.  My Mom had one and they were noisy but worked great and lasted forever!  As an aside, the cannister vacuum played a key role in a great old novel "Our Man in Havana" by Graham Greene.  Any guesses?

Homer Tittle, Class of '66 - This weeks mystery photo is an electrolux vacumn cleaner. they were sold by door to door salesman.
__________________________

Tommy Towery, Class of '64 - Yes Homer they were and my family bought ours from one of these salesmen. He must have been a real good salesman, because we were poor as dirt and he talked us into buying one. It sure was hard to do stairs with that thing.

Class of '71

I was also participated in the parade and was staged close to the Lee High School ROTC and Band.  I can not imagine that we all looked as young as these groups did, but I am sure we did.  I have to say I wondered if the number of participants outnumbered the number along the streets.  We were #53 so I know there were MANY who came behind us.  My son-in-law is active duty, has seen action on several deployments, and was leading with his troops. My husband Gene is retired Army.

Thank you Huntsville for the turn out.  Huntsville will be losing the soldiers school in the next year so the future parades will be without the participation of a great group of people.  I hope that people will band together like you tried to and participate to continue to show respect and honor for those who have served us.

I spoke with some of the Korean War veterans and they have a great outlook on life, may we all continue to age as well!
