Waukee, IA - Up visiting with the grandkids again after a moving ceremony at the B-52 dedication. We plan to visit my nephew, Ty, in Kansas City on the way home next week.

This week ends our 40th Anniversary reflections on being "moon children." I hope it brought back some memories for all of you.

Everyone needs to look at the article to the right and send me some feedback.

Please include your class year with your e-mails.
T. Tommy

First Step? Whose step?
by James Ballard
Class of '67

Easy, right? Thought I was being clever by submitting "Man's first step" as a symbolic gesture for a perfect ending to John Turrentine's inspiration. Couldn't understand why someone else hadn't already submitted it. I think I know why now. May look easy, but for example, the "two photos" above are only the beginning of a protracted internet/phone journey for anyone who wants to step in.. Any one on the "Internet" know what they're do'in ? Anyone at NASA know what they're do'in ??!! Well, they did. One time. At least.

For anyone who doesn't have time to check it out, here are some suggestions :

A) Bear track on a dirt road.
B) Lee High student track at the base of Channel 19 TV tower.
C) Mud track on the draw bridge at Edinburgh Castle.
D) All the above.

To save you time, I'll explain some of the mystery, but I still haven't found the answer to my satisfaction. Above are two images OF THE SAME FOOTSTEP, only the negative (or one of two negatives) has been reversed. Look closely at the shadow area details. It may be two different negatives, or two different times of a  lunar day, or both; but it is THE SAME FOOTPRINT ! The bottom/right photo looks like a "PhotoShop" relief image. The photos are repeated below from NASA's official site (nasa.gov)

Now, that's only part of the mystery. WHOSE step is it ?? One site, apollo11eng.htm, claims "Buzz Aldrin's" print; the other site, supposedly a "NASA" site
( starchild< /SPAN>.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/space )
claim's it to be the first step (Armstrong's) This site is in fact linked from NASA site]

I was on the MSN blog commemoration where someone finally "informed" me that Buz obliterated Neil's print (and that Buz has verified this) on his journey down the ladder (something I had already guessed but didn't want to believe, as meticulous as both astronauts were on this single issue). The blogger didn't quote his source, and have as yet to receive his response to my question about it.

Just got off the phone with Jim Hansen at Auburn, author of Neil Armstrong's bio. "1st Man". Great conver. He says as far as he knows, there are no still's of Armstrong's first step. Could not verify if Aldrin obliterated it. He gave me Andy Chaikin's number (author of HBO doc), that call is still pending. Remote possibility of newly released digitals from a fixed video inside the LEM which may/may not include further enhancement possibilities. Of all the photos taken by Buz Aldrin, only one or two distant/nondefinitive shots were taken of Armstrong. According to Jim Hansen, below photo is the only defin itive image of Armstong on the Moon, taken originally by the stationary video inside the LEM, recently digitally enhanced. Will update on call from Chaikin. Please be sure and credit Jim Hansen at Auburn and Andrew Chaiken.

Anyone Interested in An August
Mini-Reunion?
by Tommy Towery
Class of '64

I got an email this week announcing that The TIKS are having a band reunion in Huntsville Alabama on August 29th. It did not say where or how much it would cost, or even where to get tickets. That type of information will come along later I am sure.

This got me to thinking though. It's going to be a year before we have another real reunion, if we stick to our normal plans and it has been a while since we had the last mini-reunion at Optomist Park. So, why not take this opportunity to try to have a fun-filled mini-reunion featuring one of our favorite garage bands.

This should be fairly simple to organize, since someone else has done most of the work in getting the band reunion scheduled. We don't have to worry about getting a room or a dinner or anything. We don't have to limit our group to just Lee High School. This would be a great opportunity for all of the graduates from any of the Huntsville schools to get together and have fun the way we did back in the Sixties.

All we need to do is find out when and where the event will be located, and hope that they have enough tickets for all of us to attend. Personally,  Sue and I have a big trip planned for the middle of the week after that, but we will still try our best to make it down for the dance.

So, let's hear it from some of the rest of you. We could meet somewhere to eat and then go to the dance. Afterwards we can cruise the strip if you wish.

Have always looked forward to Rainer Klauss's great articles; I suspected he wouldn't pass up the moon month. His personal journeys and writing themes remind me of John Steinbeck.
