MEMPHIS, TN. - We're taking another trip down memory lane this week as we examine the logo that we had when we were Lee Generals. Next week we'll show you how that changed.

Please include your class year with your e-mails.

This Week's
Mystery Photo

Joyce Reiling, Class of '66 - The mystery item is a patch from the Green Hornet movie.  Although super heroes weren't my thing in 1966, my brother was extremely fond of them.  Thanks for all you do in bringing wonderful memories to mind!  All the best for your upcoming retirement.

John M(ark) Robinson, Class of '69 - Photo is the patch for the Green Hornet TV show which started in Sept. '66.  Loved it.  Most memoriable part of it was Cato, played by Bruce Lee who went on to bigger and better things. Take care, like the website.

Chip Smaok (No Class Year Given, so the editor will not guess and run the risk of making an error that has to be corrected.) - "This Week's Mystery Photo" is the emblem of the Green Hornet played by, if I remember correctly, Van Williams with the mega-kung fu super star Bruce Lee as his partner-against-crime/chauffer Cato.  The scripts were very light weight, probably not even up to the comic book story lines.  However, it was entertaining light-hearted fare that provided a welcome break from studying.

General Lee
Journeys Home
by Judy Hubbard and Patty Pagano
From Lee's Traveller - February 7, 1964

General Robert Edward Lee, mounted on Traveller, has come to look after his namesake. Robert Bertoldi, a junior art student, accompanied the General on his long journey from the past. Dressed in the splendid gray and gold uniform of the Confederacy, the General carried the flag of the states he represented.

The Blue and Gray Club requested the General’s reappearance. General Lee will greet all loyal rebels who wish to join forces with him against any opposition in the gym.

Last night he successfully defended our forces against an attack by a rival band of rebels. Congratulations are in order for the General: he is still the marvelous commanding officer he was a hundred years ago. His power is amazing.

Here's a 1965 Christmas ad with the following wording:

How Soon? We feel like Scrooge, but we just can’t make enough of our new portable color TV’s for all the people who want them for Christmas.
But your G-E dealer can give you an exciting demonstration, take your order for future delivers, and tell you all the facts about this big breakthrough in color TV.
Facts:
G.E.’s new PortaColor is truly portable – weighs just 24 pounds so it’s easily carried from room to room.
Yet it’s big enough for the whole family to watch, with a 60 square-inch picture.
It’s easy to tune – practically as easy as your black and white
And it doesn’t need an outside antenna if your black-and-white set doesn’t need one.
So if you want to see PortaColor, see your G-E dealer. And while you’re there, see his great line of G-E. black-and-white portables for Christmas giving, stating at $89.95.

This week's mystery is not what it is, but how much did it cost in 1965?. I painted over the price shown. It's time for "The Price Is Right" on your new Portacolor TV. What do you think the price was for the TV in the ad above? Please send your class year with your answers please.

That's great reading about Lee High history. When I started at Lee we lived on Lee High Dr. I walked out my back door and through my back yard and I was on school property. My first year there was 8th grade so I guess we were 8,9 and 10 then. So in all I guess I attended 5 years. So many happy memories and so many good friends.

Thanks to Janice for the brief history of LHS.  My parents were part of the population explosion in the late 50's and I was enrolled at Lee Jr. High in October 1959 for the 7th grade.  I remebered the school being new but was not sure of the initial year and whether 1959 was the first or second year for the school.

I think often of the next six years in the Lakewood area and all the LHS students that lived in that area.

Congratulations again to Tommy on his retirement plan.  I continue to be amazed with his library of items that I remember but could not tell you what happened to my copy.

I have not been receiving e-mails for a while and have missed keeping up with what's going on.

(Editor's Note: This is a reminder that you do not have to get an email each week to read the Traveller. All you have to do is to put a bookmark in your browser to go to www.leestraveller.com or type that into the address block of your internet browser. The email is just a reminder when the issue is ready. If you do not get one, you can still type in the address on Mondays and see the current issue.)

Two small comments on the history article:

I think in 63-64 the 9th grade (Class of 1967) joined us and we had 4 grades at Lee.  (I remember this because by that time our class was tired of being the "lowest" class!)

Also, about Lee having always been planned to be a high school - I seem to remember a plaque on the auditorium wall referring to "North-East Junior High School."  The implication is maybe it wasn't originally agreed that Lee would be a full high school?  I don't know but I do remember that plaque.

Good luck with your retirement - maybe I'll get to do that sometime!

Retirement?
by Bob Alverson
Class of '65

All these notes about retirement made me wonder, do we ever really retire?  I took early retirement four years ago and began a new career two weeks later.

Craig was correct; the Bible doesn’t mention a retirement plan here on earth.  We had a pastor who always said God did not intend for us to sit in a rocking chair and pass the time away, He always has something for us to do.

My wife, Mary (Hicklin class of ’67) and I have been led to sell our house and prepare to move to Maine to work with two churches in the Augusta area.  These two churches are being led by Chris Johnson, a 1989 graduate of Lee.  God had led us to provide a home large enough to provide rooms for mission team members to stay when they come to help with these churches.

This began with a prayer in Augusta, Maine in July, 2008 and culminates with the closing on our house Monday, December 15, the signing of a lease on a house in Augusta on the 16th and our furniture arriving later that week.

God has moved quickly in opening these doors.  We are excited about our move, sad that we will be leaving our kids and grandkids 1400 miles from us but know it is the right thing to do.

Craig, fair warning, be careful what you pray for and if you do pray for something be prepared for the answer to come.
