Growing Up and Living With Rockets
by Kent Bushart
Class of '65

I was reading today's Traveller and thought that I would share some of my  experiences with rockets and later the Space Shuttle. It started with my science project in 1964.

I wanted to show how aerodynamics affected the speed of a rocket. I was able to get the use of the Army Missle Test Range at Redstone Arsenal along with some very large equipment to measure the speed of my rocket.  This was the first time a civilian had fired one of their own rockets at the range.  This sounded very good on paper but when I fired the rocket it didn't go straight and went through the radar beam so quickly the speed could not be measured.  I then had a problem with the rocket and could not continue with the firings.  I had the experience of a life time.

I later worked in the space program at Marshall Space Flight center.  I received an award after the Challenger explosion for my work on the Loan Control System, which was part of the testing on the o'rings done at Marshall that enabled space shuttle to continue flights.

The black and white pictures are two photos from the science project and one showing the award for the work I did at Marshall after the Challenger accident.

Bobby Cochran, Class of '64 -If I remember correctly, "JETS" was the acronym for "Junior Engineering Test Society."  (or something like that.....).

(Almost, but no cigar, Bobby. I know a lot of you regular readers were a member of this group. Anyone else want to enlighten us as to what "JETS" stood for?)

Here's some of the members of the JETS...the Mystery is who are they and how many actuaully became engineers? I don't know the answer but maybe you do. If you identify yourself or someone else and know what they grew up to be, then share it with us.  Send in your Class year with your email.

We have no mail to print this week, but thought it was a good time to review our mailing list. The group below has dropped off our radar. Sometime in the past the email address I had for the following were identified as being no longer functional and their emails were returned. Please look at the list and if your name is on it please send me a current email address so that you can continue to get updates about Lee's Traveller.
