MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE - The news of Bob Walker's death came to me early Friday morning. Bob has been fighting cancer, along with a brain tumor, for the last few years. In October 2006 he was given six-months to live, but did not want anyone to know. I will miss him greatly. This issue had already been started but now may be a little short as a result of this news.

Please include your class year with your e-mails.

Last Week's
Mystery Photo
This Week's
Numbers Test
      From Our
      Mailbox
Marty Phillips, GySgt USMC, Class of '66 - The item is the trusty “P38” used for opening C’s (Combat rations) I still have the original one I received in 1968.
________________________________________

Chip Smoak, Class of '66 - The mystery item for this week, unless I am sadly mistaken, is a fold-up can open issued to military personnel primarily for the purpose of opening c-rats.
___________________________

Donna Karolewski Stone, Class of '68 - The mystery photo is a can opener.  I was reminded of these a few years ago after Hurricane Andrew in Florida.  A couple from our church was going down there and one of the things they were saying was needed was can openers as people were walking back to their areas with open cans of food.  We thought of these military can openers and scoured the army navy stores and were rewarded with boxes of them along with donations of same.  When this couple got to Florida with the can openers the people were amazed someone had thought and brought such a small item that ended up being so important.

Jan Hunt, Class of '66 - Ah! Tommy, where did you come up with this one?  I still have one on my old dog tags.  If it were not for our P-38s, what would we have done to open our C-rats?  This was the best invention of the Vietnam war next to the m-79 grenade launcher, the bee hive round for the cannon cocker red legs and the Cobra Attack Helicopter.  I want to thank all veterans and I pray each day for our troops in action.  They need our prayers and support.  God bless you all.

Remembering Bob
by Tommy Towery
Class of '64

I don't have the composure or time to write what I want to writ this week, so I will wait until next week for my true tribute to Bob. It should go without saying that I considered Bob my longest and best friend from my high school days, and I cannot do justice to this friendship in time to have the Traveller published on time.

I join a growing number of you who have suffered the loss of such a friend. I now join the ranks of Dianne Hughy McClure who lost her best friend Carolyn McCutcheon Dean, Ginger Cagle who lost her best friend Claudia Duke, and Jim McBride in how he must have felt over the loss of Terry Preston. I am sure that there are many others of you who I do not know of at this time who know similar losses.

Never let anyone cause you to hesitate in honoring veterans.  It is because of our veterans that such liberals have the freedom to try to embarrass anyone who tries to honor veterans.  I for one believe that we can not repay those who serve honorably in a branch of the military.  We certainly can never begin repay the Vietnam Era veterans who suffered so much abuse when they returned home.  Those who did not go to Vietnam but felt no shame for the abuse they inflicted on those men have no idea about what those men endured.

I appreciate the tribute to these men even though I was not one of them.

I was dismayed to read that honoring veterans could ever be construed to be right wing. I usually take this day and call all my fellow veterans to thank them for their service on their day. We bask in freedom because veterans allowed us to enjoy these freedoms...lest we forget.

Hi Tommy, Thanks for maintaining this web site. It's so fun!   I graduated in 1968 and wonder if any of your readers are aware of any plans to have a 40th reunion next summer.

I just want to take a minute to express my appreciation to the ones that have served in the military to underwrite or freedom. Due to a motorcycle accident at age 15, I was rejected not only by the Navy but by the draft, so consequently I was unable to serve our country. But, I do appreciate the sacrifices these veterans have made for us. Thank you doesn’t sound like enough, but it is sincere.

Subject:Military Service
John Scales

I noticed your listing included only Vietnam veterans.  Perhaps there are others who served in other conflicts as well.  Suggestion: open up the listing and see!

John Scales, Brigadier General, retired, US Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve
32 years service (1971-2 Vietnam, 2002 Afghanistan)

(Editor's Note: This is a great suggestion John. We want to hear from all of you classmates who were veterans, even if you did not serve in Vietnam. The page you viewed last week was an old one created when we were trying to identify the Vietnam veterans. We want to hear from all of you.)
