MEMPHIS - I'm really trying hard to come up with ideas that will draw more people into participating in this site. I thought that if I put a photo of a girl in short-shorts it might help with the male mail?

Please include your class year with your e-mails.

Last Week's
Mystery Photo
Balenciaga began to experiment with the _________ during the Fifties. The simple, loose style was the opposite of the more common nipped-in waist of that era. This dress is round necked and has sleeves cut in one with the yoke. It has centre front and back seams, side panels and diagonal pockets. It fastens at the centre back with a zip and is lined with black silk.

What was this dress called and what can you tell us about it? Do you remember the name of the song that was written about it?

Who Wore Short Shorts?
Tommy Towery
Class of '64

Classes have started again at the university, and once again I am amazed at the differences in the dress code (if there is one) today and the one when we went to school. I had to remember the song in the video below when thinking how the more the things change the more they stay the same.

Something funny came to me when I was thinking about this week's feature. I actually was kicked off of a golf course back in the Seventies for wearing shorts that were too short. Yep, had to go home and change them or not play. It was as bad as trying to wear a T-shirt on a course. Missed my tee time and all.

So my memory goes back to our Lee High School days and the thoughts of some of you who used to wear short-shorts. I know that there has to be some really interesting stories about wearing them and the results of trying to wear them, especially with some of the fathers' reactions, so I am going to ask you if you will share some of those memories with me - now that you are all grown up and can't get into any more trouble.

Please send your stories and Class year. I'll even keep the stories anonymous if you must, but I'd love to hear them..

Bruce Folwer, Class of '66 - Egredimus Editus, salutare!

The image is from that delight of mid-Fifties Myrmecological science fiction "Them!"  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047573/
The contents of the photograph include one of the mutated ants (Formicidae, so named for the secretion of formic acid, HCOOH, as an antagonistic agent) and the female lead in the movie played by Joan Weldon. The movie was typical of the era of "the evil that man hath wrought" concerns over technology, in this case, and commonly, nuclear weapons.

The connection between the two movies is Fess Parker who played the lead role in the Davy Crockett movie and the supporting role of Alan Crotty in "THEM!". A secondary correlation is the common absence of sleepware beltage in both roles.

The Rest of the Story - It was the perfromance that Fess Parker had in "Them" that caught his eye. According to sources on the wwww. "Disney was casting the role of Davy Crockett for his new TV show. He was considering James Arness (who later became Matt Dillon of "Gunsmoke"), when his eye was caught by a strapping young actor from Texas in a science-fiction film called "Them!" Parker got the part."

Class of '66

I graduated with Earl in 1966. He was a great person and fun loving guy.Earl was shot at his law office several years ago by Mike McCulley also from Lee. Mike had previously shot his ex wife and then traveled to Earl's office in the Five Points area and shot him with a shotgun in revenge for Earl representing Mike's wife in a divorce proceeding. Mike then fled to a local motel and shot himself as the police surrounded his room. A tragic event and sad loss of life.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to a strangers request. As I said, I've known Earl was gone since 2001, but didn't have any details on how he died. Sad news, but at least now I know. I'll still miss him, he always made me laugh. Please pass my thanks along to Lynn as well. Take Care and God Bless.

My Favorite Coffee Mug
Bruce Folwer
Class of '66

As requested. 18 oz Pacific Cornetta "Chug Mug". Stainless (in name only, obviously from the accumulation of "coffee crud") interior and plastic exterior. Has less than ideal but some limited Dewar characteristics and is readily noticeable, hence ideal for the terminally and pathologically absent minded who invariably leave their cup of coffee somewhere it should not be left and are dependent on the kindness of strangers and others to return cup (sticker with name, address, ... on bottom.)
