MEMPHIS - I don't know what all is going on in everyone else's part of the world, but here in Memphis we're getting geared up for "Dead Elvis Week" and expecting multiple thousands to visit Graceland. This is the 30th Anniversary of that event, and if you're one of the ones coming to Memphis, then give me a call when you get here. My work numbe is 901.258.5217.

Please include your class year with your e-mails.

It's August Again
In the South
by Tommy Towery
Class of '64
Butch Adcock, Class of '64 (L) and Lewis Brewer, Class of '66 (R) enjoy the warm August evening at the 2005 Reunion.

I was walking across the University of Memphis campus earlier this week and it dawned om me that it was hotter than a __________(fill in the blank with you own politically correct or incorrect phrase!) The air was still and the heat was present, and when I took a breath it was like I was suffocating. I said to myself, "I wonder what Charlie Hancock would have to say about today."

Charlie's gone soft on us, living up in the Northwest Territory, but on days like this I find myself wanting to go on Priceline and see if there is a cheap ticket to go visit him. He says he'll never return to Alabama again in August. Many who have moved away understand why.

He says this because of the conditions we have endured for the last several reunions we've held, with the heat of 1995, 2000, and 2005 coming to mind for me. Especially the 2005 one, photos of some of the male participants are used to illustrate this story. (Girls don't sweat!)

Well, whatever the case, I was also thinking that I really wish we were having another reunion this year. I miss the fun we have at them, despite the August temperatures. I would rather be "sweating with the oldies" than sitting in my air conditioned house watching TV.

So, to stir up a few memories and to have a contest at the same time, here's a test that will make you sweat like a final exam in Mrs. Broom's French class. Can you guess the identy of these folks that were at the 2005 Reunion?

Carolyn Burgess Featheringill, Class of '65 - Another shot from the Halloween Party That Wouldn't Die!  As I've already been "outted" as the girl in the center of the new mystery classmate photo, I have no reservations about identifying Nancy Davidson (on the left in the picture) and Gail Underwood (on the right).  I saw Gail for the first time in a lot of years at our most recent reunion.  Although her family moved and she didn't graduate with us, she stayed in the Fami-Lee by marrying Sherman Banks '65.

Subject:David France
Jim McBride
Class of '65

I just read the web site for the first time in four weeks and was saddened to read of the passing of David France.  David was a year ahead of me at Lee and we only had  a passing acquaintance.  However, we got to know each other a little better while working at Brown Engineering and then for five years we were a two man radio team in B Company , 279th Signal Battalion, Alabama National Guard. Faye was in my home room for years and they are two of the sweetest people I’ve ever met. What I remember most about David is his love for Faye and the boys.

He was a good man and a good friend and I’m sorry we didn’t keep in touch more than we did. Another great loss.

At the 2005 Reunion, Greg Dixon and I had the opportunity to jump start an old friendship after a lapse of 40 years.  We emailed and had some phone conversations prior to the heart operation he discussed in a recent edition of the fine newsletter that you so diligently publish each week.  My computer system crashed and I lost all Greg’s contact information.  Thanks to your efforts I was able to get in touch with Greg again and get caught up on life.  We are planning to have lunch together in Panama City in the very near future.

If My Body Were A Car
submitted by Mary Ardrey Aukerman
Class of '66

I thought this was worth sharing, since we are all getting there!

If my body were a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model.

I've got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish and my paint job is getting a little dull but that's not the worst of it.

My headlights are out of focus and it's especially hard to see things up close.

My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things even in the best of weather.

  My fuel rate burns inefficiently.

And almost every time I sneeze, cough or sputter--either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires!
