SAN DIEGO - I'm visiting my daughter in Sandy Eggo, California, this week for a much needed vacation. If anyone else lives there or is visiting there, my cell phone number is 901-438-0054.
I am sad to report the death of another classmate and pesonal friend, David France.
I will try to get the next issue finished on time when I return, but do not be surprised if it is a litter later than usual.
Please include your class year with your e-mails.

From Our
Mailbox
Remember last week's story about the Flintstones? Well, you never know when someone has a camera and will take a picture of you that might come back to haunt you later.
Early this week I got an e-mail from Gudrun Wagner Klauss, Class of '65, with the following note:
"In the article titled Flintstones...We're the Flintstones, Carter's Skateland Style in the July 9 edition of the Traveller, Sarajane asked, "Does anybody remember dressing up in costumes to go to Carter’s?"
I certainly do!!! It was in 1960, and here are some pictures I took and still have in my album. I wasn't much of a skater, but I did enjoy photography."
Attached to her email were five photos taken that night. Above is the first of the five, which shows Cavegirls Sarajane and Judy along with two other folks. Who are the other two? Please send your class year with your emails.
David R. France, 61, of Huntsville passed away Friday. David was born on April 22, 1946, in Atlanta. He graduated from Lee High School in 1964. He retired from the aerospace division of PPG Industries after 34 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Faye France; sons, David and Kevin; sisters, Camilla Woody and Debbie Brunhoeber; and brother, Jimmy France. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Berryhill Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert White officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Personal Reflections

David was my friend. I cannot tell you how or why, but we ran around a lot together in the last couple of years at Lee. I don't know if it was because of Bob Walker or Lewis Brewer, but somehow the four of us became a group. There were many nights we spent running between Shoney's and Jerry's, and many nights we just hung out together. We didn't do much visiting at each other's houses, but we had some memorial adventures in Huntsville and Northern Alabama.
I looked back at my book, A Million Tomorrows - Memories of the Class of '64, and was amazed at the amount of time I spent with David that was recorded in the journal I kept. It records the trips up and down the strip, some of the parties we atteneded together, and several trips to Guntersville with him, Lewis, and Bob and the Shafer girls. It also documents the night we made a big flag with "Lee" on it and hung it on the front of Butler. We did the same with a "Seniors" flag that we ran up the flagpole at Lee during the last weeks of our senior year.
Several years ago I ran a story about an unforgettable Halloween night I spent with David, but I can't find the date for it right now.
I remember how excited I was to see him at the 1990 reunion. Below is a photo I took of him and his wife, Faye McAnally France, Class of '65, that night. The smile says it all. We'll miss you David.
The picture below was taken at the 2000 reunion. Left to right seated are Bob Walker, Class of '64; Lewis Brewer, Class of '66; David France, Class of '64; Tommy Thompson, Class of '64; and Tommy Towery, Class of '64 (me) standing behind David.

Adding a little information to Linda Beal Walker's 20 Ways to Tell if You Are a True Alabamian item 20, Texas is the state where Dr. Pepper was created.
The origin of the name is not known today. One story is that the man who created it named it after his girlfriend's, fiancee's, wife's father to gain favor with him. I forget her actual status at the time. Any store that sells soft drinks in Texas that does not sell Dr. Pepper is in danger of losing a lot of business and/or being closed down.
There is a town in Texas, unfortunately I do not recall the name at this time, where one can get the original-formula Dr. Pepper.
My maternal grandparents always kept Dr. Pepper around their house. It was one of the things to which I greatly looked forward when I visited them. Whenever I visited them my grandfather took me to a real general store where he and other old-timers sat around a potbellied stove and talked. He always bought a couple of cartons of Dr. Pepper to take home.

Mystery Photo
Okay, so we all know that it is an ice pick. I had hoped that some of you might send stories of camping trips, picnics, ice machines, or defrosting refrigerators with one of them. I was sure that someone had a story or two about their dad and his mastery of this instrument. But, this must not be the case. Perhaps we'll have more fun with this week's photo.
