Not much e-mail from you folks this week, so this turns out to be a small issue. Thanks to Eddie Sykes for the lead story.

Please include your class year with your e-mails.

This Week's
Mystery Photo
On the first day of its long history, Disneyland charged visitors $1.00 admission ($6.70 in 2005 dollars) to get through the gate and see three free attractions in four themed lands. Individual tickets for the 18 rides cost 10 to 35 cents each. I know you will all look up the day on Google, but what I am looking for this week is to find out who was the first Lee General to go to Disneyland. The editor made his first trip in November of 1969. I know some of you can beat that date. So...send it the date (at least a guess at month and year) when you first went to visit Mickey.

Well...we stumped the band last week with our Mystery Photo. The photo was a current one of Mark Lindsay, former lead singer for Paul Revere and the Raiders, shown in an earlier photo above. Some people do age better than others.

My Memphis Connections
by Eddie Sykes
Class of ‘66

I always loved Huntsville.  It was a great place to grow up. I only lived there from 1958-66 before moving to Memphis the summer after graduation.

My heart was never in Memphis -- it stayed in Alabama.  My friends in Memphis even nicknamed me “Alabama” and some of those old friends only know me by that name. I often wonder why I never moved back to Huntsville after college.  People seem to get rooted very quickly in life and don’t think about anything other than their day by day activities.  At least that has held true for me.

However, every once in a while I would run into one of my Lee classmates in Memphis.  I always wanted to hook-up and become friends with them, but it seemed like it never worked out. I replied to Joan Kephart email published on last week web page. That is actually what triggered this note.

Joan, was a quite, attractive girl from the class of 1967. I played football with her brother and rode to school with her and Dwight several times.  We lived just down the street from them.  I wanted to ask her out, but she never gave me the time of day. She moved to Memphis after graduation and I think she went to college at Southwestern or Memphis College of Arts.  My friend Ken Martz called her when he was in Memphis visiting me.  I got a number and called her a couple of times, but we never got together.

I ran in to our MIE (Most Illustrious Editor) Tommy Towery at Memphis State. I knew him because he was the editor of the Traveller and a popular upperclassman. At MSU he was the ROTC high ranking officer and I was a long curly haired hippy type that was forced to take ROTC. The only time I wore the uniform was in the Veteran Day parade.  So, I kelp a low profile and dogged anyone (including Tommy) that would question why my hair was so long or why I was out of uniform.  I wasn’t anti-military, but just did not like conformity.   Besides the uniform was either to hot or not warm enough.  I learned that I could get away without the uniform when they did not have my collar size (18) when the uniform was issued to me during my Freshman year.  Since, I could not button the collar, I was given permission not to ware it.  I used that excuse for the next two years and was proud of the fact that I was the only one that I knew of that got away with this. So, that is why I dodged Tommy. I did not want to draw any attention to myself.

I also ran into Dianne Reeves (Class of '66) a couple of times and got her phone number.   I called her two or three times, but she did not have the same love for Huntsville that I did.  More importantly she didn’t seem interested in going out with me… Oh, well that’s three classmates down and one to go.

I played football with Jim Hutto and we both graduated with the Class of '66.   We both played center during our junior year. I saw his picture in a FedEx magazine around 1990 and called and emailed him a couple of times.  I talked with his wife, but never talked with him. He was a pilot and traveled a lot and I was a software engineer and traveled quite a bit also.  We never got together in Memphis or at a class reunion.  The time he attended a reunion I did not and so forth.

I moved to Orlando Florida in 2000 without every hooking up with any of my Memphis/Lee classmates.   However there are several classmates living in the Florida area.  I connected with my old friend Lamar Robinson (Class of '66) recently.  He is living in Tampa.  If any of you living in central Florida and would like to hookup sometime, email me at eosykes@fedex.com.   Remember… We are all FamiLEE !
