Opening The Cedar Treasure Chest
(A Time Capsule of Memories)
Part 4

Remember how new stores used to give free samples of things when they first opened. A lot of the Dime Stores gave out yardsticks at one time or another. When Southern Sash opened near downtown on Clinton Street, they gave out little pottery vases that were painted by swirling them in multicolored paints that gave a stripe look around the pottery. I remember watching in amazement when the guy was making the one that he gave to me. Of course that was before Southern Sash burned down (and Mack Yates would forever blame me for doing that). But like other tales, that is another story for another time. Does anyone remember the little tire shapped rubber ashtrays from Firestone?

When the branch office of the 1st National Bank opened at Five Points I remember going to see it with some of my friends. I don't know why we went, but it seemed like the thing to do. It was new and fresh and something additional to the Five Points area.

I still remember telling my friends that we needed to go to the opening and see if they were giving out any free samples. And like Marvin K. Mooney the time came and so we went. (Anyone remember Marvin K. Mooney? No he didn't go to Lee.)

So in we go to the bank and like the wise acre I always was, I asked the friendly greeter at the door, "Are you giving away any free samples?" I didn't see so wise when I was told "Yes we are!" and was handed the card above with the dime pasted onto the business card.

The card with the dime went into my Cedar Box and has remained there for most of the time since that day. I took it out sometime last year to use in web photo, but it has now been returned to its resting place along with the rest of the treasures.

Can anyone remember what year this event took place? Do any of you have any tales related to the Five Points Branch of the 1st National Bank? If so then send them in.

Jeff Fussell, Class of '66 -I don't know this particular fellow's name, but he's every boy I grew up with.  All of us, at one time or another, had that shirt and we all had that haircut. You remember -- It was on the top row second from the left on the style poster which was on the wall of every barbershop in the country.

We're going to ask one more week, do any of you recognize this person? If you know please let me know so I can put the mystery to bed. The hair and the shirt style looks Sixtyish to me. Any clues?

Classmates Recommend
Some Web Sites To Visit

Over the last few weeks several of you have sent me links to some web sites to share with Classmates. Click on the underlined word and enjoy if you wish.

Merry Christmas

Another Christmas Card
"Take me to your leader!" Remember how "cute" that phrase used to be? Well, it did not come from this item. Its not an alien or a robot. What is this and where do you remember first seeing one? They are common in many areas, and I can remember the first place that I saw one and therefore will always associate that place whenever I see one again. Send in your own memories of this thingy and where it reminds you of.

Hi, Tommy.  Your cousins, who are children of your grandmother's sister, are your first cousins once removed.

What an unexpected honor! Reactions to my "back in the day" musings usually include stealthy glances at the wristwatch and an occasional expression of feigned interest (translation: wrap it up!). Anyway, thanks for the kind words and the place of honor in the Traveller.
