Current Open Topics

Do you have any memories of a special something that you were given, but may not still have? Send in any graduation present memories you would like to share with your classmates.

Do you have a story about the first big thing you bought with money earned from your first real job, either during or after Lee?

What did you do or do you have planned for your 60th Birthday?

A Mini-Reunion to honor our classmates who are celebrating their 60th birthday this year

Type:  Picnic

Time:  1:00 pm

Where:  The large Pavilion - the one with the fireplaces right by the parking lot.  There will be a sign showing it is reserved for the "LHS Birthday Reunion".

What to bring: A covered dish to share.  We'd like to have the food spread out and ready to eat by 1:30 pm.  Plates, cups, utensils, tablecloths, napkins, and name tags will be provided.  We still need ice and tea, soft drinks, water....Tommy is bringing a birthday cake.

Who is invited: Alumni that attended Lee High anytime between 1960 and 1966 and guests - whether you graduated with us or not.  There's still a lot of folks out there that have not attended any of the reunions.  If you're one of them, we'd love to see you this time!!!

This week we're taking the Mystery Photo in a different direction. This is not an object from our Lee days, but is a photo of someone from those days and not necessarily a Classmate. This should be equally fair to the males and females of the group. Can you identify this person?

Chip Smoak, Class of '66 - Tommy is doing his usual fantastic job.  He does it so well that most of us probably forget how much hard work he puts in each week to help us keep in touch with each other.

This week's mystery item is a hand warmer.  Being fueled by lighter fluid I suspect, even though I have never been a smoker, that those who smoked used this as an excuse to keep lighter fluid handy for their cigarette lighters since disposables were not available in those days.  I still have one of those hand warmers and I still do not smoke.

Jan Hunt, Class of '66 - The mystery photo is of a pocket hand warmer.  I have used these while deer hunting but found that keeping them filled with lighter fluid and lit was more trouble than cold hands.  Good job Tommy.  God bless you for your dedication to this site.

Bruce Fowler, Class of '66 - It appears to be a catalytic hand warmer. Since similar items are still available today it is clearly a case of timeless design relevancy.

Woody Beck, Class of '65 -     Greetings from sunny Verona, Italy. The photo is of a hand warmer fueled by lighter fluid, as I recall. I used one or two frequently when in the winter I delivered newspapers at 5:30a each morning.  Ciao,

Rick Simmons, Class of ’64 - I remember that Lester Cutter used one these on his morning Birmingham News routes in the winter.  It worked quite well.

Jackie Vickers Thrasher, Class of '64 - The mystery photo is a hand warmer that we used to use to keep our hands warm during football games so that we could play our band instruments.  It really worked!

Jeff Fussell, Class of '66 - This week's photo is the Jon-E Pocket Warmer. I never owned one, so I can't share any stories about it. When I was a Boy Scout, I tried to explain that a Jon-E was essential gear, but my parents didn't take the bait.I compensated by carrying a Zippo.

Jim Bannister, Class of '66 - This week's Mystery Photo looks like a hand warmer. If I recall right, it worked like a Zippo cigarrette lighter. I never owned one but I did have a pair of electric socks.

Being no slave to fashion, my good friend C.E. Wynn would be the proud owner of those lime green shoes in the photo in last week's e-mail.

5th Annual Rock and Roll Review
Niles Prestage
Class of '65

Though not officially a part of the 60th Birthday Mini-Reunion, Niles is hosting a barn dance at his place on the Saturday night before the Sunday picnic, and wanted to extend the invitation to his classmates that are planning to come to town for the get-together.

It will be held at The Prestage's Barn at 2595 Gurley Pike, Gurley Alabama on Saturday October 7, 2006 from 6pm until the band goes home.

Directions:  From Huntsville: Memorial Parkway or I-565 - Go east on Highway 72 East, turn left on Ryland Pike, go through the 4-way stop at Maysville Rd, about 3/4 mile to the intersection and turn right on Gurley Pike and follow it around a sharp curve to the left, then go less than a mile and look for a red barn on your left.

The band is a popular one in the Huntsville area "The Time Machine" and specialized in late 1960's and 1970's music and features our on Jerry  Brewer, Class of '64, on the drums.

Dining for the evening will be provided from the favorite home-made recipes from some of America's finest cooks and will feature receipes from the pages of the new Locus Grove "Our Daily Bread" cookbook.

Cost is $15 per person (Maximum $25 per family) and payment can be made at the door. All proceeds of the evening will be used to aid families in need in our surrounding communities.

Contact Niles at napjr@aol.com or phone 776-0490 to RSVP.
